Looking to finish the subpar year on high note both the AC Milan and Roma are set for a Sunday night showdown at San Siro.

Milan are seven points clear of their visitors in the Serie A table, but neither side has lived up to their potential through a season marred by problems behind the scenes.

Once again this season, sensational play maker Tijjani Reijnders looked the real deal for Milan as his goal lifted the Rossoneri above the average as they claimed the maxima in the game before a Christmas break.

The Rossoneri’s Dutch powerhouse scored from the edge of the area at the Bentegodi stadium, defeating Hellas Verona and keeping his club in the race for Italy’s Champions League positions.

Among all the participants, no other Serie A midfielder has contributed as many goals this season (10), Reijnders is also among the leaders in the number of shots and dribbles; still, at least several Milan players have been in their worst form.

But before beating Verona, they had fallen into mid-tier after having managed only one win in five matches, leading to further calls for the axing of under-fire head coach Paulo Fonseca.

Not only is his squad now 14 points behind arch rivals Inter Milan and 15 points away for leaders Atalanta BC so Scudetto aspirations are now out of the question but they are also in company of other squads fighting for European place.

Milan might have registered six shutouts in eight league games at San Siro this season, but they have scored none in three of the previous four – as many times in fourty-five. So, they shall look forward to signing off a substandard year by arriving at their fans some goals to cheer about.

After a trip to Saudi Arabia for the Supercoppa Italiana, the second-city team still has a lot to prove in the second half of the season, which begins early next month. While Sunday's hosts have won all four of their last year-ending Serie A games, Roma have lost all three of their last 20 games, having won 17 of the previous 20.

They enter this match after a turbulent 12 months that included the dismissals of beloved manager Jose Mourinho and club legend Daniele De Rossi, a disastrous stint under new Southampton manager Ivan Juric, and the comeback of retired veteran Claudio Ranieri.

Even though Ranieri appeared to stabilize the team during his temporary tenure, the Giallorossi continued to perform poorly at home, moving closer to the relegation zone in the beginning of December.

They recovered from the low point of giving up two late goals to lose to lowly Como by scoring nine goals in two games in less than a week. Ranieri overcame another of his former clubs last time out, while Sampdoria was soundly defeated in the Coppa Italia.

Paulo Dybala proved his value by scoring twice in a 5-0 hammering of Parma at Stadio Olimpico, moving Roma back into the top half of the table. Dybala has been frequently linked to a move elsewhere during the forthcoming transfer window.
