The curtain of the second round in the KNVB Beker will fall from the Johan Cruijff Arena Thursday night as Ajax will take on Telstar of the Eerste Divisie.

This game is second between these teams, the first time was in this tournament in the 2019-2020 season, Ajax won this game 4-3 at the opponent’s stadium.

The Eredivisie Cup will be Ajax’s second encounter in the domestic cup this season and Ajax should head into the cup match feeling very good about themselves after their 3-0 over the Almere City in the Eredivisie last week to move back into the top two ahead of Utrecht.

That result also meant that the Godenzonen could leapfrog a place in standings where they are now only six points behind league leaders PSV, who lost 1-0 to Heerenveen at the weekend.

Instead Francesco Farioli will now be able to experience the KNVB Beker for the first time ever, as his team, like the likes of PSV, AZ and Feyenoord, who begin their campaigns from the second round due to football in Europe.

A year ago, Ajax were knocked out of this tournament in this round, after consecutive final losses to the Boeren in the two previous seasons since the triumph in the 2020-21 campaign.

Not surprisingly, the hosts come into this game as strong favourites as they have impressed on their own patch this season as they lost only one of their 14 league games and won 12 of them.

On the other hand Telstar are having a decent season this time in Divisie having climbed to 11th in the league table after they thrashed Helmond Sport 3-0 at their home ground last week.

The goals were scored in the first half by former Go Ahead Eagles forward Eddahchouri who grabbed his third hat-trick in the match that saw him become topscorer for the season with 14 goals, three goals ahead of the rest in the league.

The White Lions are now 26 points at the halfway point of the league season, well on their approach to surpassing the 35 points they secured over the entire previous campaign.

Lately, Anthony Correia's team has had trouble finding success away from home. They have lost three straight games and just won once in their last eight away games (W1 D3 L4).
Farioli will probably try to make a few changes for this game because they have three days until their league encounter against Sparta Rotterdam. Players like Brian Brobbey and Steven Berghuis should return to the attack.
Sivert Mannsverk and Amourricho Van Axel-Dongen will only return to action in the New Year, while Gaston Avila, who is still recovering from knee surgery, is out for the hosts.

Tyrone Owusu, a midfielder for the visitors, was benched before halftime due to an injury sustained during the weekend's triumph over Helmond Sport and is considered a serious doubt for this game.

Suriname international Jayden Turfkruier is most likely to join Nils Rossen and Guus Offerhaus in the engine room if Owusu is unable to make it back in time for this match.
