On Wednesday evening at Rugby Park Rangers will play Kilmarnock because the Blackgang occupy the bottom tier of the Scottish Premiership standings.

The two teams occupy different league positions as Kilmarnock maintains their ninth spot while Rangers holds second place with 56 points from 27 games.

Kilmarnock entered the new season with lackluster performance by suffering elimination from multiple competitions including conference and Europa League qualifiers and experiencing losses in the League Cup and their first six league matches.

Since the beginning of the season Killie lost their first three matches while drawing in their following three games before securing three victories in their subsequent four matches but have continued to show inconsistent form moving forward.

The team under Derek McInnes occupies slot nine in the Scottish Premiership table holding 31 points from 27 league matches with eight victories along with seven draws and 12 losses that put them four points above Dundee in position 11.

A successful string of upcoming results could push Kilmarnock toward a host place in the top six positions before the season concludes.

The hosts will begin their matchup against second-placed Rangers as underdogs even though they want to start a successful streak on Wednesday.

The mood at Gers worries them since they suffered defeat in two of their most recent three matches including a 1-0 loss to Queen's Park followed by a 2-0 defeat at St Mirren's hands before Philippe Clement received immediate dismissal.

After a difficult season in charge, Clement was fired as a result of such outcomes, and Barry Ferguson was promptly given the position temporarily.

Rangers will be upset by their loss to St Mirren this weekend, which not only ended their league-unbeaten streak of nine games, but also prevented them from catching up to league-leading Celtic, who also suffered a defeat.
The good news for the Gers is that they have dominated this matchup in recent years, winning four of their past five meetings while losing the others.
