In the first leg of an intriguing Europa League quarterfinal, AC Milan takes on Roma on Thursday at San Siro, beginning an all-Italian match.

Milan is undefeated in nine games against their opponents from the city and has won both of their Serie A matches this season, but the Giallorossi have a recent history of enduring in Europe.

After defeating Rennes, who were eliminated from the Champions League after finishing third in the infamous "Group of Death," Milan defeated Slavia Prague handily in the round of sixteen, winning both legs to secure a 7-3 aggregate victory.

The seven-time European winners have been playing well lately. They defeated Lecce 3-0 last week to solidify their hold on second place in Serie A and win seven games in a row for the first time since 2006.

Milan's front line has really kicked into gear after a rough stretch during mid-winter. They have now scored at least once in their past 29 games across all competitions, with three goals in three of their last four.

Four players from Stefano Pioli's team have scored ten goals or more this season: Christian Pulisic (13), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (10), Rafael Leao (12), and Olivier Giroud (15), the latter of whom scored in both legs of the team's victory over Slavia.

For the first time in fifteen years, so many players have scored ten goals or more for the Rossoneri, and there is no question that they have the firepower to contend on two fronts in the remaining portion of the season.

Even though Inter Milan, their city rivals, appears to be winning the Scudetto with seven games remaining, Pioli's team will still want to defeat Juventus in order to become runners-up and, more significantly, secure the club's first-ever Europa League victory.

Milan has an amazing record of 11 victories and just 2 defeats from 15 Serie A games, making them especially difficult to beat at home. Ahead of Roma's arrival, Milan had gone 10 games without losing at San Siro.

While Roma's previous trips to two UEFA finals have captivated the attention of Italy's Eternal City, Milan made it to the semifinals of the Champions League last season before suffering a heartbreaking loss to Inter.

It was difficult to accept Sevilla's victory in last year's Europa League final after they had defeated Feyenoord to win the first-ever Europa Conference League in 2022. Perhaps more importantly, the latter outcome marked the beginning of the end for former manager Jose Mourinho.

Since losing just twice in 15 games under new coach Daniele De Rossi, who will remain at his beloved club until the end of the season, Roma has shown to be a different prospect from the one that was defeated by Milan and fierce rivals Lazio at the conclusion of Mourinho's tenure.

After De Rossi's comeback, there have been about ten victories to be happy about. Gianluca Mancini's goal in the first half of Saturday's Derby della Capitale vengeance mission against Lazio was the deciding factor.

Roma, who are now in fifth position in the Serie A rankings, wants to play in the Champions League the following season. However, they also have the option of earning a spot at the top table of Europe by winning the Europa League final in Dublin.

The Giallorossi have only triumphed in two of their previous 14 away games in European play, and they have not won any of their previous eight knockout round games, despite their surprising demolition of Brighton & Hove Albion in the last 16.

In addition, Roma, who lost an all-Italian UEFA Cup final to Inter in 1991, has found it difficult to overcome Thursday's hosts. They have only triumphed in one of their previous 13 meetings with Milan, which included a 3-1 loss at San Siro in January. This is Roma's worst losing streak against the Rossoneri in over 40 years.
