Liga Portugal champions Benfica and Taca de Portugal winners Porto will face battle in the Portuguese Super Cup on Wednesday evening for a chance to capture their first trophy of the 2023-24 season.
Last season, Benfica won their 38th league title with 87 points, two more than their opponents in this match, while Porto won the Portuguese Cup by defeating Braga 2-0 in the final in June.
Last season, As Aguias had a tremendous struggle with Porto in the league, but emerged victorious, leading the league from matchday four until the conclusion of the season and earning the title by two points.
Benfica is Portugal's most decorated team, but they had underperformed in recent seasons, and winning the league last season ended a four-year drought that includes three third-place results and a runners-up medal.
Over the course of the season, Roger Schmidt's team recorded 28 victories, three ties, and three losses for a total of 87 points, which was also the number they managed in their 2018-19 league triumph when they beat Porto by two points.
Benfica had a successful season not just locally, but also in European play, reaching the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals before losing to eventual runners-up Inter Milan.
Benfica had the greatest home record in the league last season, with 15 wins in 17 home matches, one tie, and one loss, however it is worth noting that their lone home setback came against this opponents.
While Porto lost the league title to this opponent last season, they did win two pieces of silverware, the Taca de Portugal and this trophy, when they defeated Tondela at the start of the season.
Despite Benfica gaining the league lead early on, Porto refused to give up and remained in the title fight until the last day of the season, winning each of their last nine league games and going undefeated in their final 12 games.
Sergio Conceicao's team won 27 games, drew four, and lost three, completing the season seven points ahead of Braga in third place and with the second-best defensive record of just 22 goals surrendered.
Following their Taca de Portugal triumph over Braga, the Dragons played five club friendlies coming up to this match, winning two, drawing two, and losing one, scoring 10 and allowing five.
Porto have won this tournament more times than Benfica and Sporting combined, and will be looking to grab one over this opponent early in the season to set the tone for the rest of the season.
