Roma has experienced a resurgence in the 2023-24 campaign, notching two wins and scoring nine goals in the span of a week. After securing their first Serie A victory against Empoli, they continued their winning streak in Europe. Meanwhile, Torino has also found their form with consecutive wins.
Roma, who were Europa League finalists last season, made a strong start in the competition by defeating Sheriff Tiraspol 2-1, with Romelu Lukaku extending his remarkable record of scoring in 12 consecutive Europa League appearances.
The Giallorossi initially had a slow start to the season, garnering just one point from their first three league matches. However, their fortunes turned around when Lukaku made his first start for the club in a resounding 7-0 win over Empoli. Paulo Dybala's brace added to the impressive victory at Stadio Olimpico, a venue where they have accumulated most of their recent points.
On the contrary, Roma has struggled in away games, winning only one out of their last 10 Serie A matches on the road, with six losses. Interestingly, their sole away victory came against Torino in April.
Historically, Roma has dominated Torino, winning 10 of their last 13 league matches and scoring 25 goals compared to Torino's 12. Additionally, Torino has faced difficulties when playing at home against Roma, losing five of their last six Serie A encounters.
However, Torino is entering the upcoming game on the back of two consecutive wins, defeating Genoa and Salernitana. Their defense has been solid, with no goals conceded in three out of four matches.
While Roma fans were optimistic about the addition of Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea, no one could have foreseen the seven-goal spectacle Roma put on display last weekend. Lukaku not only scored his first goal for Roma but also played a crucial role in a brilliant counterattack. His partnership with Paulo Dybala has fans eagerly anticipating more such moments.
Roma's star attackers will face a formidable challenge against Torino, a team known for its defensive strength under coach Ivan Juric. However, Roma's offensive duo of Lukaku and Dybala could be the key to breaking down Torino's solid defense. The battle between Roma's attackers and Torino's backline, led by Rodriguez, Buongiorno, and Schurrs, will likely determine the outcome of the match.
Roma couldn't have benefited more from the international break. It was all doom and gloom in the Italian capital just two weeks ago. The Giallorossi have just one point after three matchweeks, which was their poorest season-opening performance in years. In addition, throughout those three games, Paulo Dybala, Renato Sanches, and Houssem Aouar all sustained injuries.
The ideal treatment for all of that? a 7-0 thrashing of Empoli last Sunday at the Olimpico. On the other side of the scoreboard, Romanisti had been all too accustomed to this kind of offensive outburst over the previous 15 years. But this time, the Giallorossi assault was the one scoring with efficiency.
Rui Patricio's performance as Roma's seasoned goalkeeper was among the most alarming aspects of their sluggish start. Most Romanisiti would have fired Patricio after the previous campaign, if they had their way. However, given Roma's financial situation, it was never anticipated that the seasoned Portuguese player would be replaced before the end of his three-year contract.
Last weekend, things got better because Roma controlled the game the entire time, but he wasn't really put to the test because he only faced eight shots and made two saves. We'll see how Torino tries him tomorrow, but if Roma is to meet its goals for the season, Patricio must be at least an average goalkeeper.
It's possible that José Mourinho will alter his starting lineup for tomorrow's game given that there are three games in eight days, which include travel to Eastern Europe and then up to Northern Italy. After sitting out the previous two games, Chris Smalling and Lorenzo Pellegrini are anticipated to return in some form.
It's unlikely that either starts at the first whistle, though. Renato Sanches' injury in Moldova further limits the choices in midfield, though Leandro Paredes, who replaced Sanches midweek, is probably going to start against Torino.
