In the opening round of the Copa del Rey on Thursday, Valencia will travel to Northern Spain to play fourth-tier team UD Logrones.

Los Che, who have had a more promising season overall, are in the top half of La Liga and will try to prevent a huge giant killing in their cup opener.

Despite their well-publicized recent problems, the eight-time Copa del Rey winners have had remarkable success in this competition.

Valencia was finalists in 2022 and lost heartbreakingly to Real Betis on penalties after winning their most recent title in 2019 by defeating Barcelona in the championship match.

Valencia has advanced past the fifth round every season since 2004, whereas their forthcoming lower-league rivals have never done so.

Valencia last lost to a team outside of La Liga when they were eliminated by UE Lleida over twenty years ago.

They will also be in much better spirits going into this matchup thanks to a solid start to the La Liga season under former player Ruben Baraja, which was much needed as they spent the whole previous season on the verge of relegation.

Valencia, who had accumulated 15 points from their first 11 games, is currently unbeaten in three games and was unlucky not to win back-to-back this past weekend.

At San Mames, the score ended 2-2 after Athletic Bilbao's goal in the 97th minute denied Baraja's team three points.

That outcome followed a convincing victory at home against Cadiz and a respectable draw away at Real Mallorca. However, they will have some difficult road tests in the upcoming weeks as they visit the current top two, Real Madrid and Girona, in their next two away games.

This is also where Logrones' Copa trip begins, and despite their lowly status, the recently demoted team has history.

The La Rioja team has advanced to the fourth round of the cup twice in the last few years, in 2010–11 and 2015–16.

In 2010–11 and 2019–20, when Los Che were the holders, Valencia emerged victorious and once more caused havoc in Logrones.

Due to an early Maxi Gomez goal, Valencia only narrowly prevailed 1-0 in their most recent match, and Real Sociedad only managed a 1-0 victory over them in the previous season.

Nearly 13 years have passed since Logrones famously led their two-leg, fourth-round match at Mestalla, but they were ultimately humiliated and lost 7-1 overall.

Diego Martinez's team should enter this match with a lot of confidence because, since falling to the fourth division, they have been playing excellent league football. They have gone nine games without a loss and have been playing excellently lately.

Following two previous impressive wins over San Juan (4-0) and Mutilvera (3-0), Logrones defeated Arenas Club 5-1 this past weekend to secure a playoff spot in Group 2 of the Segunda Federacion.

Their only loss in all competitions occurred last Wednesday in the painful Copa Federacion, a cup competition for teams competing in the Federacion divisions, as Logrones lost to Badalona Futur after blowing a 2-0 lead.
