The Philadelphia 76ers find themselves in a tough spot early in the season, just weeks into their campaign, and are already scrambling for solutions. With a disappointing 1-7 record, the 76ers are desperate to turn things around when they face the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday, who are on a roll with two consecutive wins.
Expectations were high for Philadelphia this season, with many predicting a deep playoff run led by the formidable trio of Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey. However, injuries have cast a long shadow over their hopes, leaving the team to deal with unforeseen challenges.
One of the most significant setbacks has been the absence of Joel Embiid. The reigning NBA MVP has yet to play in a game this season due to a knee injury. On top of that, he recently received a three-game suspension after an incident in which he shoved a columnist. Embiid is expected to make his highly anticipated season debut on Tuesday when the New York Knicks visit the 76ers.
Paul George has also struggled to stay on the court, missing the first five games due to a knee issue. Since returning, his performance has been underwhelming, with a shooting percentage of just 41.7% overall and a dismal 3-of-16 shooting mark from beyond the arc.
Adding to the team's woes, Tyrese Maxey, one of the team’s most promising young players, suffered a hamstring injury during a loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday. The injury is expected to sideline Maxey for multiple weeks, further depleting the 76ers' roster.
With a significant portion of their star power sidelined, the 76ers are now focused on staying afloat until they can get healthier.
"The ship hasn't sunk," George reassured the team. "We know that we have to remain positive. We know that big fella is coming back, and he's one of the best. We're going to get Tyrese healthy, and we'll get him back. Once we do, we’ll finally be a complete team and start to build from there. Then, we can truly begin to discover who we are."
In their most recent game, Philadelphia suffered a 116-106 defeat at the hands of LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers. The loss was another setback for the 76ers, who have struggled to find their rhythm without their key players. Rookie Jared McCain stepped up in the absence of the team's stars, leading the 76ers in scoring with 18 points, albeit on 6-of-17 shooting. Paul George and Kelly Oubre Jr. struggled in the loss, combining for a poor 8-of-29 shooting performance, including an abysmal 0-of-10 mark from three-point range. Each finished the game with just nine points.
"We have some opportunities there, and it feels like we miss them, or we go through stretches where we can't buy a bucket," said 76ers head coach Nick Nurse. "We have to collectively figure out how to play better, especially on offense."
While the offense has been inconsistent, it’s on the defensive end where the 76ers really need to improve. Philadelphia has allowed 105 points or more in all eight of its games so far this season—a concerning trend that will be even more troubling when they face the Charlotte Hornets, who boast a dangerous offensive duo in LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller.
LaMelo Ball has been one of the early-season standouts in the NBA, averaging 28.4 points per game. In Charlotte's recent 103-83 victory over the Indiana Pacers, Ball was instrumental in the win, scoring 31 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter alone, which matched the entire Pacers team's total for that period. Ball currently leads the NBA in fourth-quarter scoring, a testament to his ability to rise to the occasion when the game is on the line.
"His confidence in himself and his trust in his teammates really shows in the fourth quarter," said Hornets coach Charles Lee. "It becomes contagious for the whole team. We all know that we have LaMelo, and he’s going to elevate all of us and help us perform better."
Brandon Miller, the Hornets’ emerging star, has also been a key contributor. Miller recently hit a game-winning putback at the buzzer against the Detroit Pistons, and then followed that up with a red-hot shooting performance against Indiana. He scored 29 points, knocking down 7 of 11 three-pointers.
"It's definitely a scary sight for the league," Miller said of the Hornets' dynamic duo. "LaMelo is that two-way player that Coach Charles has been preaching to everyone, including myself. I think our combination of his ability to distribute and my shooting ability makes us a dangerous pair on the court."
With the Hornets' offense clicking, the 76ers will need to improve defensively to have any chance of winning. The two teams are on different trajectories—while the Hornets have been building momentum, the 76ers are still searching for answers. Despite their struggles, Philadelphia can take solace in the fact that they have historically dominated the Hornets, winning 23 of the last 25 matchups, including all four encounters last season.
The 76ers will need to play much better, particularly in the defensive department, to have a chance against the Hornets, who are firing on all cylinders. A win for Philadelphia would be a much-needed boost, both for their morale and for their hopes of staying competitive in a tough Eastern Conference. With Embiid and Maxey expected to return soon, the team will hope that a healthier roster will allow them to finally start living up to their championship aspirations.
