Galatasaray, currently leading the Turkish Super Lig, aim to maintain their position at the top as they face Ankaragucu on Sunday evening.

Ankaragucu, struggling to steer clear of the relegation zone, face a tough challenge against the league leaders, who capitalized on Fenerbahce's stumble to claim the top spot.

Ankaragucu's recent league form has been disappointing, earning just one point from their last three matches. Following a loss to Fenerbahce and a goalless draw against Sivasspor, they suffered another defeat against Konyaspor last weekend, with Louka Prip's goal sealing a 1-0 victory for Konyaspor.

Currently sitting just two points above the relegation zone, Emre Belozoglu's team needs to improve if they hope to secure their position in the top flight for a third consecutive season. However, their upcoming fixture against Galatasaray poses a significant challenge, as they have lost their last three meetings against the league leaders.

Galatasaray made a triumphant return to European competition on Thursday, securing a 3-2 victory at home against Sparta Prague in the first leg of their Europa League knockout playoff, despite being reduced to ten men for approximately 30 minutes.

The Lions took the lead in the first half courtesy of Kerem Demirbay, but Angelo Preciado swiftly equalized for Sparta Prague just two minutes into the second half. Dries Mertens then restored Galatasaray's lead around the hour mark, only for Victor Nelsson to receive a straight red card shortly after, leaving Galatasaray with ten players.

Sparta Prague capitalized on the numerical advantage, with Jan Kuchta scoring to level the game for the second time just three minutes later. However, in stoppage time, Mauro Icardi came to Galatasaray's rescue, scoring the winning goal and granting them the advantage heading into the return leg.

The Europa League victory marked a successful week for Okan Buruk's team, who also capitalized on Fenerbahce's stumble to climb to the top of the Super Lig with a 2-0 win over Istanbul Basaksehir.

Galatasaray's primary focus now is to maintain their lead as they prepare to face Ankaragucu on Sunday. They are well aware that any slip-up could see them relinquish the top position to Fenerbahce once again.

The defender Alper Uludag, who has missed the last several games due to a knee injury, will not be available for Ankaragucu.

Tolga Cigerci fills the holding position, and a front three consisting of Renaldo Cephas, Olimpiu Morutan, and Ali Sowe is anticipated.

Due to a back injury, winter addition Serge Aurier will not be available for Galatasaray.

Moreover, Hakim Ziyech won't be playing until next month as he continues to heal from a thigh injury. Once more, Icardi will lead the assault with Mertens' assistance.

The home team has struggled in their recent league matches, failing to secure a win in their last three outings. Despite a promising 5-1 victory over Erzincanspor in the Turkish Cup earlier this month, they couldn't maintain momentum and suffered a 1-0 defeat to Konyaspor in the league last week.

Conversely, the visiting team has been in outstanding form this year, winning ten out of their 11 games so far. Their recent 2-0 home win over Istanbul Basaksehir, courtesy of first-half goals from Barış Alper Yılmaz and Dries Mertens, propelled them to a two-point lead over arch-rivals Fenerbahce.

Meanwhile, Fenerbahce faced a setback with a 2-2 draw against Alanyaspor but managed a crucial 3-2 home win against Sparta Praha in the UEFA Europa League knockout stage first leg, thanks to Mauro Icardi's injury-time winner.

These teams have a long history, having crossed paths 129 times in various competitions since their first encounter in 1937. Predictably, the visitors hold a dominant record with 83 wins compared to the hosts' 24, while 22 matches have ended in draws.

Last season, the visitors secured a league double over the hosts with an aggregate score of 6-2. They continued their winning streak with a 2-1 victory in the reverse fixture in September.

Ankaragucu has struggled recently, securing just two wins in their last 12 league matches, both at home, while seven games ended in draws. In contrast, Galatasaray boasts nine consecutive wins across all competitions, with two goals scored in each of those games.

Furthermore, the visitors boast the best defensive record in the Super Lig this season, conceding only 14 goals in 25 games, with just five of them conceded in away matches.
