On Thursday, the teams that are at different ends of the Turkish Super Lig league will square off when Besiktas hosts Alanyaspor.

The title-chasing hosts are in fifth place with a three-point advantage over the top three after a poor start to the season, while their opponents are in 18th place but only in the relegation zone due to goal differential.

After a dismal start to their attempt to win the Turkish Super Lig title for the first time since 2021, Besiktas will make their way back to Istanbul on Thursday with hopes of igniting a turnaround in their campaign.

The Black Eagles have won eight games and lost five, including a devastating setback to Fenerbahce in their most recent league match, leaving them 14 points behind rivals Galatasaray and Fenerbahce after 15 rounds of play.

Riza Calimbay's team faced Fenerbahce earlier in December after a disappointing draw away at Ankaragucu. Despite drawing level through Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the first half, Dusan Tadic restored the visitors' lead around the hour mark, and Sebastian Szymanski added a third goal deep into injury time, the team ultimately lost 3-1.

Subsequent to the Super Liga action's suspension last weekend due to a referee's assault, Besiktas is back in action. They won their last Europa Conference League group game last Thursday, 2-0, away at Lugano, despite having already qualified for the playoffs with just one point from their first five games. Cenk Tosun and Emrecan Terzi scored the goals.

Calimbay's team will be eager to start a run of wins on Thursday with little margin for error if they are to have any hope of staying ahead of the competition going into the second half, as they are now entirely focused on rescuing the Super Lig campaign.

They take on an Alanyaspor team that is looking to win back-to-back league games for the first time this year after a difficult start to their own campaign in an effort to retain their top-flight position.

Despite having a strong start to the 2023–24 season, the visitors would only manage one more three-point haul from the following thirteen attempts. Their second victory came in early October, but after that, they would suffer five consecutive Super League losses while giving up 11 goals and scoring just once.

The Antalya Province team, managed by Fatih Tekke since the beginning of last month, was in a concerning position after that miserable run, which culminated in a 5-0 thrashing away at Galatasaray at the end of November. However, they have at least stopped the slump in recent weeks, having first ended the five-match losing run with a 2-2 draw at home to Konyaspor at the beginning of the month after leading on two occasions through Sergio Cordova and Joao Novais.

Following a 1-0 victory over Kocaelispor in the Turkish Cup fourth round, Tekke's team most recently traveled to face fellow struggling team Istanbulspor. They won 1-0 again, marking a crucial return to winning ways in the league. Initially, it appeared that the game would end goalless, but Novais' penalty kick in the 89th minute ensured they would leave with all three points.

Due to this outcome, Alanyaspor overtook Pendikspor and moved up to the 18th rank in Turkey's top flight. Having resumed play following the league's games being suspended over the weekend due to a referee's attack, they are now just one point out of safety and will look to cause a major upset in the capital in order to move out of the bottom four.
