On Friday night, Besiktas and Caykur Rizespor, who are vying for a spot in the Turkish Super Lig's top four, square off at Vodafone Park.
Before this match, the hosts were fifth in the league and only one point behind Istanbul Basaksehir, who are in fourth place. Meanwhile, the visitors are three points outside of the top four.
Besiktas has struggled this season and might end up outside the top four for the second time in three years when they play this game. In the ten years preceding, they have finished in the top four every time.
Due to their fluctuating performance, the Black and Whites have had five different managers this season. Senol Gunes led Besiktas into the new season until being fired at the start of October.
Since then, they have had Serdar Topraktepe, Riza Calimbay, Burak Yilmaz, and Fernando Santos in leadership positions; Topraktepe is currently back in command for his second temporary tenure.
Besiktas has only won one of their last seven league games, and this poor run of form has caused them to fall out of the top four for the first time since matchday 15. They trail fourth place by one point going into this important match against top-four rivals Caykur Rizespor.
With just four league games left until the season finishes, Besiktas must quickly improve their performance and begin winning games if they are to finish in the top four and earn a trip to the European tournament.
As the visitors are also in a fight for fourth place before the league ends, their next opponents might prove to be difficult for the hosts.
Caykur Rizespor has only been in the European qualifying spots for two matchdays this season. However, they have been firmly in the running thanks to four wins and a draw in their last seven games, even though a run of five games without a win through February threatened to upset their hopes of finishing in the top four.
Luckily for the hosts, Ilhan Palut's team has had difficulty winning away from home, taking only 12 of a possible 48 points—the seventh-fewest in the league—when playing away from home.
