Liverpool will aim to strengthen their position at the top of the Premier League, alongside Manchester City and Arsenal, when they face Brentford in the early kick-off on Saturday at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Before the start of Matchday 25, Liverpool will have held the top spot in the Premier League every night since Boxing Day, totaling 53 consecutive nights. This is equal to the number of nights they held the top position from the beginning of the 2020-21 season until Christmas 2023. Currently, they sit two points ahead of both Manchester City and Arsenal in the league standings, although Manchester City still has a game in hand going into the weekend's matches.

Liverpool has amassed 54 points at this stage of the 2023-24 season, which is 15 points more than they had after 24 games last season (39). However, it's worth noting that on three out of the last four occasions where they had accumulated 54+ points after 24 games, they finished as runners-up in the league (in 1990-91, 2018-19, and 2021-22). The exception was in the 2019-20 season when they had 70 points and won the league – a success that manager Jürgen Klopp will be eager to replicate in his final season at Anfield.

Liverpool's current position at the top follows their response to a recent loss against Arsenal with a 3-1 home win over Burnley on Matchday 24. Goals from Diogo Jota, Luis Díaz, and Darwin Núñez secured the victory, although Burnley managed a second-half response through Dara O'Shea.

Despite Trent Alexander-Arnold's contribution with an assist in the Burnley game, he sustained a knee injury and will miss the upcoming match against Brentford, as well as the EFL Cup final against Chelsea. Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah, who has returned to training, might not be risked before the final at Wembley.

Even in Salah's absence, Liverpool's attacking prowess remains potent, with Núñez being involved in five Premier League goals in 2024, second only to Jota. Núñez's header against Burnley marked his first league goal at Anfield since October, when he scored against Nottingham Forest.

Jota has tallied nine goals in the Premier League this season and aims to reach double digits for the second time in the competition, having achieved 15 goals in the 2021-2022 season. He's been in impressive form, scoring five goals in his last six league matches, and previously found the net in his sole top-flight appearance at the Gtech Community Stadium back in September 2021.

Apart from Salah and Alexander-Arnold, Klopp's team will be missing Joël Matip, Dominik Szoboszlai, Thiago Alcântara, and Stefan Bajcetic due to injury. However, Ibrahima Konaté will return from suspension, likely partnering with Virgil van Dijk. Conor Bradley may step in for Alexander-Arnold, while Joe Gomez and Alisson are available after recovering from illness.

Brentford ended a concerning streak of poor form with a 2-0 victory over Wolves, lifting them to 14th place in the league table. Christian Nørgaard opened the scoring in their last match, followed by another goal from Ivan Toney. Toney has been in fine form since his return, scoring three goals in four Premier League games. However, Liverpool is one of the teams he's faced without finding the net.

Neal Maupay has been a reliable partner for Toney, contributing to a goal in each of his first six home league starts for Brentford. Only two players in Premier League history have achieved a similar feat: Alan Shearer for Newcastle United and Álvaro Negredo for Manchester City.

In terms of team news for Brentford, Yoane Wissa and Frank Onyeka will be back from Africa Cup of Nations duty, but several players including Josh Dasilva, Kevin Schade, Aaron Hickey, Bryan Mbeumo, and Rico Henry remain sidelined due to injuries.

The home team has a perfect record in Premier League encounters between Brentford and Liverpool, with Brentford winning four matches and drawing one. Last season, Brentford emerged victorious in this fixture with a 3-1 win, thanks to an own goal from Konaté and goals from Wissa and Mbeumo. Although Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored for Liverpool in the second half, it didn't impact the outcome.

Despite this, Liverpool has never lost back-to-back league matches against Brentford. They've also consistently scored and conceded in all seven of their away league games against Brentford.

In the reverse fixture earlier this season, Liverpool secured a 3-0 win at Anfield in November, with goals from Salah (twice) and Jota, showcasing their strength as contenders for the Premier League title.

Brentford recently broke a streak of conceding in 13 consecutive Premier League games by keeping a clean sheet against Wolves. However, their home performance has been inconsistent, with four losses in their last six home matches, including defeats to Man City, Wolves, Aston Villa, and Arsenal. This is in contrast to their previous 30 home games, where they lost only four times.

Interestingly, Brentford's two most recent home defeats came after they scored first, which is unusual considering they had only lost one of their first 25 home games when scoring first in the competition.

On the other hand, Liverpool has faced difficulties in away games in London, winning only two of their last eight away Premier League matches in the capital. Their two league defeats this season came in away games in London, against Tottenham and Arsenal, despite beating Crystal Palace and West Ham in other matches.

Facing off against Wolves once again for the fourth time in two months, Brentford supporters might be tired of seeing their team battle against the orange shirts. They endured a 4-1 loss at Molineux in December and suffered a heartbreaking FA Cup defeat in a replay last month.

However, revenge was sweet in the West Midlands as Christian Norgaard's header put Brentford in the lead. Despite Craig Dawson's equalizer being disallowed for a close offside call, Ivan Toney ensured victory for the Bees.

The early injury to Wolves' key player Matheus Cunha certainly worked in Brentford's favor, but their victory was well-deserved. This win propelled them to 14th place in the table, surpassing Crystal Palace, though they are still far from their days of challenging for the top half of the league.

Although Brentford currently holds a six-point gap above the relegation zone, they have a game in hand over most of the teams below them. The victory over Wolves was crucial for their defense, ending a 14-game streak without a clean sheet since October.

Their next challenge is to improve their defensive record at home in the Gtech Community Stadium, where they've conceded multiple goals in their last four Premier League matches. However, they have a strong record of scoring at home, with only one of their last 25 top-flight home games failing to see them find the back of the net.

The Bees had a scoreless game in a 1-0 defeat against Arsenal, slightly denting Liverpool's quadruple aspirations. However, Liverpool swiftly bounced back from their 3-1 loss to Arsenal with a convincing 3-1 victory over Burnley in front of a record-breaking crowd at Anfield.

With nearly 60,000 fans in attendance, Diogo Jota and Dara O'Shea each scored headers in the first half, while Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez added goals in the second half, showcasing Liverpool's dominance in the air and their ability to respond effectively.

Although Manchester City briefly surpassed Liverpool in the standings with a win over Everton earlier in the day, Jurgen Klopp's team reclaimed the top spot, leading by two points over both City and Arsenal, though they have played one more game than City.

Liverpool's hold on the Premier League title race is tenuous, especially with 14 of their 18 dropped points this season coming from away matches. Nevertheless, Liverpool's attacking prowess has ensured they've scored in every away game in the current campaign.

While Liverpool secured a comfortable 3-0 victory against Brentford at Anfield in November, their encounters with Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium have been more challenging, with Brentford earning five out of six possible points. Notably, neither team has managed to secure an away victory against the other in the Premier League era.
