Lyon will aim to bounce back from their worst start to a Ligue 1 season since 1966 when new manager Fabio Grosso takes over on Saturday.

Les Gones, who have two points from a possible 15, head to the Stade Francis-Le Ble to face high-flying Brest, who are second in the table after five games.

While Lyon's troubles have been obvious during the first few weeks of the season, Brest's start to the 2023-24 season has piqued everyone's interest for all the right reasons, with only table-topping Monaco picking up more points than Eric Roy's men.

The Pirates are second in Ligue 1 after five games, with three wins, one tie, and one loss. They also have one of the greatest defensive records in the league, with only Marseille and Nice conceding less goals this season.

After coming from two goals behind to overcome Lens 3-2 on the opening weekend, Brest won 2-1 over Le Havre before losing 2-0 to Marseille, but the Brittany club wasted no time in rebounding from their first setback of the season.

Following a goalless draw with Rennes prior to the international break, the Pirates rallied from behind to upset Reims 2-1 last weekend at the Stade Auguste-Delaune, with goals from Mahdi Camara and Pierre Lees-Melous keeping the ship afloat.

Lyon, on the other hand, could not have hoped for a worse start to the 2023-24 season, as they currently sit third from bottom in the standings with five games completed, having earned two draws and three losses to remain winless this season.

In fact, Les Gones have had their worst start to a Ligue 1 season in 57 years, with a single point from their first four games, including 4-1 home defeats to PSG and Montpellier, which led to the firing of manager Laurent Blanc.

Following a goalless draw with Le Havre last weekend, in which Lyon piled up 23 shots while denying their visitors a single shot on goal, Fabio Grosso was named the club's new head coach on a one-year contract.

Grosso made 78 appearances for Les Gones after winning the 2006 World Cup with Italy before guiding Frosinone to the Serie B victory last season, so the former Lyon player will be motivated to expand on his coaching exploits and return OL to their rightful place.

Brest midfielder Mathias Pereira Lage started the first three games before missing the last two with a muscle injury, so Eric Roy will likely stick with Mahdi Camara, Pierre Lees-Melou, and Hugo Magnetti in the middle.

In a 4-3-3 system, Jeremy Le Douaron and Martin Satriano should continue to lead the attack alongside in-form winger Romain Del Castillo, who has three goals and two assists in five appearances this season.

It is difficult to foresee how Lyon will line up now that Grosso has arrived, but the new manager is expected to rely on key players such as Alexandre Lacazette, Corentin Tolisso, and Rayan Cherki to make an early impact.

owing to the absence of veteran defender Dejan Lovren owing to a muscle injury, Clinton Mata and Sinaly Diomande should continue at center-back, with Sael Kumbedi and Nicolas Tagliafico at full-back.

Lyon, the former French Ligue 1 champions who dominated the domestic scene for most of the 2000s, have had a season to forget so far this year, with the club facing relegation after a winless five-game start to the season.

That dismal start resulted in manager Laurent Blanc being fired after a 4-1 hammering at the hands of long-time nemesis PSG three weeks ago, followed by another lackluster performance against newly-promoted Le Havre in a 0-0 tie last week.

Les Gones have chosen to replace Blanc with Fabio Grosso, the man who led Frosinone to the Serie B title last year, but he will have his job cut out for him with a Lyon club that presently has the league's joint lowest goal differential in 2023-24.

Brest, meantime, has had one of the best starts to a French Ligue 1 season in history, earning enough points in five games this season than it took them fifteen last year.

This is due to a strong defense that has allowed the third fewest goals to opponents this season, trailing only Nice and Marseille, as well as the second-fewest shots allowed record at home.

The young players on the team have collectively managed to score an average of 0.4 points per match, along with 2 assists and 1 red card in their record. As for Olympique Lyonnais, they have maintained a clean sheet in 40.0% of their matches this year but have received 15 yellow card warnings. Lyon currently holds the 18th position in terms of goals conceded, having allowed a total of 10 goals, resulting in a goal differential of -7. In terms of their goalkeeping statistics, Olympique Lyonnais has a save percentage of 59.1% (with 22 shots on target against them) and ranks 16th in the league with only 2 points earned. Their goals against per 90 minutes stands at 2.00, with 12 saves and 2 clean sheets, while they've scored 3 goals, with an expected goal tally for the year at 5.9.

Over on the Brest side, Marco Bizot is the man guarding the net. Bizot boasts a professional soccer career record of 156 wins, 68 draws, and 99 losses. His remarkable career has seen him secure 95 clean sheets, resulting in a shutout percentage of 29.6%. Born in the Netherlands, Bizot has faced 1,416 shots in his 321 career starts, with a goals against per 90 minutes rate of 1.27 (405 goals conceded) and an impressive save percentage of 72.9%. With 28,802 minutes of playtime to his name, Bizot has made 1,018 saves in his career.

On the Lyon side, Remy Riou is the anticipated guardian of the goal. Riou has conceded an average of 1.15 goals per 90 minutes and holds a career record of 105 wins, 98 draws, and 121 losses. Throughout his career, he has accumulated 110 clean sheets and successfully defended against 1,265 shots in his 29,173 minutes of play. Riou has conceded 372 goals while making 901 saves in 324 starting assignments, boasting a save percentage of 72.4% and a clean sheet rate of 34.0%.

Jeremy Le Douaron is a key player for Brest, capable of making a significant impact on the field. He has provided a total of 8 assists while receiving 1 yellow card over the course of his professional soccer career. The French forward has netted 16 goals in 4,735 minutes of playtime and has been entrusted with a starting position in 52 matches, averaging 0.30 goals per 90 minutes.
