Two squads separated by a 15-place gap in the early Premier League standings are set to clash at Turf Moor on Saturday, as Burnley hosts Tottenham Hotspur.

While Vincent Kompany's team put aside their struggles in the top tier during the EFL Cup this week, Spurs' wait for a trophy will continue for several more months due to their loss to Fulham.

Despite their impressive performance in the Championship last season, Kompany's Burnley has yet to establish themselves in the Premier League since their quick promotion back to the big stage. A two-week break between matches against Manchester City and Aston Villa didn't prove to be significant.

With the notable transformation of Luton Town's Kenilworth Road, Burnley had 16 days to recover for a clash with Unai Emery's Villa last weekend. However, despite Lyle Foster's goal in the 47th minute, goals from Matty Cash and new signing Moussa Diaby for Villa made Foster's effort inconsequential.

Occupying a spot in the relegation zone - though having played fewer games than the teams around them except for fellow promoted side Luton - Burnley managed to boost morale by defeating Nottingham Forest 1-0 in the second round of the EFL Cup. However, they secured advancement through Zeki Amdouni's goal in the late stages.

Next up, Burnley will face Salford City, the League Two team that eliminated Leeds United via penalties, with Burnley's main objective being to break a six-game winless streak in the Premier League that dates back to April 2022.

The challenges don't ease up for Burnley after the international break either, as they face tough matches against Manchester United and Newcastle United before the month's end. Meanwhile, Tottenham comes to Turf Moor with a strong desire to prove themselves.

During Spurs' EFL Cup match against Fulham, rival fans enjoyed the spectacle as Postecoglou's altered lineup entered halftime with a 1-0 deficit due to Micky van de Ven's own goal. However, Richarlison's rare goal brought Spurs level before they were defeated in the penalty shootout, marking another early exit from a cup competition.

Postecoglou's team doesn't have much time to dwell on the Cup disappointment, and there's no reason they should. The Australian manager's attack-oriented squad sits in third place in the Premier League standings thanks to consecutive wins against Manchester United and Bournemouth.

Spurs' recent form includes victories over James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski at the Vitality Stadium last weekend, continuing their streak of scoring at least twice in each Premier League game under Postecoglou.

Now aiming for their fourth consecutive away game without a loss for the first time since August 2022, Tottenham has mostly positive memories from their recent encounters with Burnley. They've won four of their last five matches against Burnley, but their previous visit to Turf Moor ended in a 1-0 loss. Antonio Conte famously questioned his team's performance after that match.

The Premier League action resumes this weekend, featuring an important match at Turf Moor on Saturday as Tottenham Hotspur faces off against Vincent Kompany's Burnley side.

Presently, Burnley sits in 18th place in the Premier League standings, struggling to find their footing in the top-flight this season. Their narrow 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in the previous game provides a model they'll be aiming to replicate in this weekend's match.

Contrastingly, Tottenham Hotspur is enjoying a successful run this season, currently securing the third place in the league table. However, their recent exit from the EFL Cup due to a loss against Fulham has put them in a position to rebound strongly in this upcoming fixture.

In their head-to-head history, Tottenham Hotspur has been dominant against Burnley, winning 52 out of the 122 matches played, as opposed to Burnley's 42 victories. Burnley's victory against Tottenham Hotspur at home with a 1-0 scoreline in February 2022 was notable, and they have won consecutive home league matches against Spurs since 2010. Tottenham Hotspur has secured 10 wins out of their 16 matches against Burnley in the Premier League but has suffered all three of their losses against Burnley while playing away.

Burnley has commenced this Premier League season with back-to-back defeats, which could result in them starting a top-flight season with three consecutive defeats for only the fourth time in their history. Additionally, Burnley is set to become one of the few Premier League teams to begin a season with three consecutive home games.
