West Ham United, currently positioned ninth in the Premier League standings, aim to narrow the gap toward European qualification by securing a win against Burnley at Turf Moor this Saturday.

Having halted their losing streak with a triumph over Nottingham Forest, the Hammers aim to capitalize on this success in their upcoming match. On paper, West Ham appears the stronger side and is anticipated to secure a full three points.

Meanwhile, Burnley finds themselves at the bottom of the table, facing the looming possibility of relegation to the EFL Championship after just one season in the Premier League. Ahead of their clash, The Hard Tackle scrutinizes this encounter between the two teams.

The home team will miss Jack Cork's contribution, with an expected return to action next month. Additionally, Lyle Foster remains absent for an extended period after being granted time off by Vincent Kompany and the club.

Burnley is set to adopt their customary 4-4-2 setup, featuring James Trafford in goal and Vitinho and Charlie Taylor as full-backs. The defensive duo's aim will be to contain West Ham's threat from the flanks. Jordan Beyer and Dara O’Shea will pair up in the central defense.

Sander Berge and Josh Brownhill will take charge in the midfield, focusing on defensive solidarity and physical presence. Operating as wingers, Mike Tresor and Luca Koeleosho will seek opportunities for counter-attacks. Finally, Jay Rodriguez will spearhead Burnley's frontline alongside Zeki Amdouni.

There was hope in the football community that Vincent Kompany's young Burnley team would succeed in the Premier League and quickly acclimate to life back in the big time after the team easily won the Championship with 101 points last season and spent almost £100 million on new players in the summer. Rather, they have experienced the exact opposite.

No team in Premier League history has started a season with fewer points than the Clarets (4), therefore it is not surprising that they are at the bottom of the standings. They are currently level with Everton after being docked 10 points for breaking financial regulations.

Burnley has lost five straight league games and given up 14 goals since their only top-flight victory of the season, which came away at fellow promoted team Luton Town in early October. Their most recent matchup before the international break ended in a 3-1 loss to Arsenal; Burnley has not lost six straight top-flight games since 1895.

Many teams would be happy to be back home, but Burnley hasn't been able to please the Turf Moor supporters this season, losing all six home games by an overall score of 18-5. If they lose to West Ham on Saturday, they'll become just the second English team ever to lose their opening seven league games at home, the other being Newport County in the fourth division in 1970–71.

Though they face a West Ham team that they have not defeated in their previous four encounters, Burnley still has hope as a win this weekend might propel them out of the relegation zone if other outcomes go their way.

After being winless for four games at the close of October, West Ham bounced back in November, winning three of their final four games across all competitions to go into the international break on a high.

West Ham is just three points behind Newcastle United in seventh place and four behind Manchester United in sixth place in the Premier League standings, currently sitting in ninth place. In order to stay competitive with their fellow European chasers, Moyes and company will need to put together a solid run of results against Burnley, Crystal Palace, and Fulham.

Prior to this match on Saturday, West Ham had triumphed in all seven of their Premier League encounters with teams that had been promoted. They had also triumphed in all ten of their prior encounters with the team that began the day at the bottom of the table.

Success against Burnley is by no means guaranteed, though, as the Hammers have only won two of their previous ten top-flight away games, losing their previous three and giving up ten goals in the process. They have also failed to score in three of their last four trips to Turf Moor, drawing 0-0 on their most recent visit in December 2021.

If Bowen passes a late fitness test, he will likely start as the starting striker (he has scored in all six Premier League away games this season). If he is unable to play, Mohamed Kudus or former Burnley player Danny Ings could start in his place.
