Arsenal faces an early trip to Goodison Park this season as they look to rectify recent mistakes in Merseyside. They'll take on Everton in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
Before the international break, Everton secured their first point of the season in a 2-2 draw with Sheffield United, while Arsenal managed a thrilling 3-1 victory over Manchester United.
During Everton's game against Sheffield United, Jordan Pickford played a pivotal role in a goalkeeping redemption story. Everton opened their scoring account for the season through Abdoulaye Doucoure before Cameron Archer equalized brilliantly for Sheffield United. Pickford then had an unfortunate own goal as Archer's shot hit the post and deflected off Pickford's back into the net. But Arnaut Danjuma later drew the visitors level before Pickford made a remarkable double save from Oli McBurnie to secure a crucial point for Everton.
This was a much-needed point for Everton, as they had suffered three consecutive losses to Fulham, Aston Villa, and Wolverhampton Wanderers without scoring a goal.
However, Everton still finds themselves in 18th place, just above Luton Town and bottom-placed Burnley. Their two goals scored is also the worst offensive record in the league, tied with Luton Town.
Their 2-1 win over Doncaster Rovers in the EFL Cup provided a slight morale boost, but Everton faces Arsenal having lost five of their last six home games. They'll need a bit of history on their side if they intend to extend Arsenal's struggles in Merseyside.
Arsenal's recent match against Manchester United at the Emirates saw them secure a thrilling win with late drama. Marcus Rashford and Martin Odegaard scored in quick succession for Manchester United, but Kai Havertz's penalty was overturned, and Alejandro Garnacho scored to put Arsenal in the lead. Gabriel Magalhaes's return from an offside position saved Arsenal from conceding. In injury time, Declan Rice's deflected shot and Gabriel Jesus's breakaway goal sealed a deserved win for Arsenal.
With 10 points from their opening four games, Arsenal currently sits in fifth place, just behind Liverpool, West Ham United, and Tottenham Hotspur, due to an inferior goal difference. They have a North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur after their Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven.
In recent years, Arsenal has struggled at Goodison Park, losing four and drawing one of their last five matches there, following a 5-2 victory in Arsene Wenger's farewell season.
Everton's medical team has been busy, with James Tarkowski suffering a facial injury in their last game. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is expected to play, but Seamus Coleman (knee), Jack Harrison (hip), and Dele Alli (groin) are sidelined. Jarrad Branthwaite, who withdrew from England Under-21 duty due to a groin injury, should be fit for the match. Youssef Chermiti (groin), Andre Gomes (calf), Lewis Dobbin (knock), and Michael Keane (knock) have overcome their concerns but are unlikely to start.
Arsenal, on the other hand, has a relatively small injury list, with only Thomas Partey (groin), Jurrien Timber (ACL), and Mohamed Elneny (knee) out of contention. Partey is back in training. Gabriel Magalhaes, Gabriel Martinelli, and Gabriel Jesus, who had to adjust to British time zones after international duty, should also be available.
Bukayo Saka has reportedly been dealing with an Achilles problem for months, but he is expected to be fit for Sunday's match. Eddie Nketiah is expected to lead the attack, despite not getting any minutes for England during the international break.
This Sunday, Everton hosts Arsenal at Goodison Park as both teams return to league action after the international break.
Everton has struggled for several years, and many expect them to battle relegation again this season. They've had some bad luck in their two home games so far and have only earned one point from four matches.
On the other hand, Arsenal hasn't hit top form yet but has managed to secure ten out of twelve possible points. Their win over Manchester United has boosted their hopes of challenging for the title.
New signings Beto and Arnaut Danjuma have made a positive impact for Everton, and they are likely to start on Sunday. However, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who performed well in this fixture last season, may not be available.
Jack Harrison, Seamus Coleman, and Dele Alli are dealing with injuries and won't be in the lineup against Arsenal. Burnley's Dwight McNeil might start to provide his crossing threat from the left side.
Arsenal has emerged from the international break without significant injuries, although there are concerns about Bukayo Saka's Achilles. There haven't been reports of his potential absence.
Thomas Partey remains sidelined for Arsenal until mid-October due to a thigh injury, while Jurrien Timber is a long-term absentee.
Gabriel Jesus is competing for his first start of the season, possibly replacing Kai Havertz in the lineup with Fabio Vieira.
Everton, one of the five winless teams in the league after four games, earned their first point of the season against Sheffield United in their previous match, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Abdoulaye Doucouré and Arnaut Danjuma scored for Everton.
Arsenal is unbeaten in their league campaign, with three wins in four games. They bounced back from a home draw against Fulham with a thrilling 3-1 win over Manchester United. Martin Ødegaard, Declan Rice, and Gabriel Jesus scored late to secure the win.
These two teams have a history dating back to 1905, with 221 official meetings. Arsenal has had the upper hand with 110 wins compared to Everton's 65, with 46 matches ending in draws. Interestingly, Everton has performed better in recent meetings, winning four of their last six games.
In the previous season, both teams won their home matches and kept clean sheets. Everton has an impressive record at home against Arsenal, being unbeaten in their last five meetings, with four wins and three clean sheets.
Unfortunately, Everton has one of the worst attacking records in the Premier League this season, scoring just two goals in four games and failing to score in their two home matches so far.
