This Friday night at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Ghana will play Madagascar in the opening match of Group I of the CAF World Cup qualifiers.
The Black Stars, who are the pre-tournament favorites to win this group that also includes the Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, and Mali, are strongly favored to get off to a winning start.Ghana, one of the most decorated countries on the continent, has dropped in FIFA's points system in recent years and is currently ranked 11th out of all African countries.
Over the past few years, the Black Stars have had a strong run at qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations, winning their group with 12 points and going undefeated throughout that span.
They have, however, subsequently seen a minor decline in performance, and they enter this game having suffered two straight defeats to Mexico and the United States last month.
Although the defeats to those higher-ranked opponents away from home may be justified, Chris Hughton's main worry will be that his team failed to score in either of those games and allowed six goals in that period.However, with nine straight victories at home, including a 3-0 victory over this opponent back in January, the hosts will be feeling quite confident now that they are back on home ground.
Madagascar, on the other hand, had a dismal AFCON qualifying campaign, losing all six of their games and finishing last in their group with just three points.
Though, as they demonstrated at the beginning of the year when they placed a very respectable third at the CAF African Nations Championship, their performance in those qualifications may not have been a true representation of their abilities.
