The teams that finished closest to Paris Saint-Germain as champions the previous season square off in Ligue 1 on Sunday night when Lens hosts Marseille.
With virtually little separating them heading into the weekend, both clubs are exhibiting signs of turning around their seasons following concerning starts.
For a brief period early in the season, Lens was bottom of Ligue 1, but they swiftly moved over that and are now difficult to beat at home.
Midweek saw PSV Eindhoven snap their nine-game winning streak, although Lens were unlucky to lose by a slim 1-0 margin that could have gone any way.
That was their first loss since they had only picked up one point from their first five games of the season. Their Champions League opener, a draw against Sevilla, seemed to be the spark that ignited their remarkable turnaround.
With two points separating Lens and PSV in second place in the UCL, Lens is still well-positioned to advance from their group. In addition, Lens appears poised to make a domestic run for Europe, sitting just two points behind fifth place.
As Lens has only lost one of their previous 13 games in Ligue 1, it will be crucial to ensure that the Stade Bollaert-Delelis stays a stronghold if they are to contend near the top.
This indicates that Gennaro Gattuso will have a tough task ahead of him, since Marseille has lost six of its past eight away league games and is without a win.
Gattuso has had a generally favorable effect in his first seven games in command, with three victories and two draws; his victory against AEK on Thursday away in Athens was a very outstanding result.
That might spur them to break their losing streak at home, but in his two away league games as manager, Gattuso has lost.
With that game in hand on December 6, the club will have the chance to gain ground on the teams above them. They have not yet received a deduction of points because of the nasty circumstances that forced the postponement of their match against Lyon last month.
Although OM will encounter a hostile and daunting welcome from Lens, their 2-0 victory in the Greek capital indicates Gattuso is putting in place a solid spine for the team.
With that victory, they are now atop their Europa League group and have almost assured themselves of playing on the continent come January 1.
With a large portion of his senior team at his disposal, Lens manager Franck Haise may choose to start the team exactly the same as they did against PSV.
Morgan Guilavogui, who was sent off for a second yellow card, was one of nine players booked by Haise in the middle of the week. However, Guilavogui's suspension only applied to games played in Europe, so he will be eligible.
Oscar Cortes and David Costa, two fringe players, are not there, and Jimmy Cabot is still sidelined due to an ACL tear.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will not be playing for Marseille this weekend due to a hamstring injury he sustained against Lille last Saturday.
