In the first matchweek of Ligue 1’s return from the winter break, league leaders Marseille will welcome struggling Le Havre to the Orange Velodrome on Sunday.

Les Olympiens will come into the game with a lot of ease having dealt with Saint-Etienne 4-0 in the Coupe of France last game while Le Club Doyen will be dreaming of a super start on 2025 after a shocking lose to fourth tier football team Stade Briochin on 22 December.

Marseille now occupies the second position in Ligue 1 with 30 points on 15 games, although they are the tenth behind Paris Saint-Germain, the classical winner.

In the coming second half of the campaign, Les Olympiens stand with a game in hand against their competitors for the European place, and are well placed for a direct UEFA Champions League place next season.

Three points behind third placed Monaco as well as having a three-point cushion over the chasing pack of Nice and Lille, Sunday’s hosts will be chasing their fifth success in six games this weekend.

In the last five games where De Zerbi’s side has won four games, they conquered Monaco with a 2-1 score at the beginning of December and then played Lille landing into a 1-1 stalemate.

This first match of twelve in 2025 will act as a clear signal of intent though from a De Zerbi side who must surely at least enter the second part of the season as the outright challengers to the second place.

On the other side Didier Digard’s Le Havre are 17th on the table having got only 12 points in fifteen games and the Le Havre is likely to be relegated this season.

Le Club Doyen were shown the door to Ligue 1 last term and have not found the going easy this season, picking up only four victories apart from those 11 defeats seen.

Les Olympiens last experienced defeat in an early November 3-1 loss to Auxerre, where Marseille only scored a consolation penalty after the score was already 3-0.

Interestingly, Digard's team is the only one without a draw this season, and because they are also the division's lowest scoring team, it is reasonable to assume that their poor offensive performances have cost them crucial points from possible stalemates.

To exacerbate the situation, Digard's team has been in poor form all season long. They lost all of their December games, including a 1-0 setback at Stade Briochin that knocked them from the Coupe de France.

Though it is unlikely that Le Havre will win all three points against Marseille, they might try to establish a solid foundation for their survival with a respectable draw. To set expectations for this weekend, it is important to note that three of Le Havre's four victories this season have come against teams in Ligue 1's bottom five.

Faris Moumbagna of Marseille is getting closer to playing again after suffering a cruciate ligament injury, but it is unlikely that he will do so until later this month at the latest.

While Quentin Merlin is probably going to continue to start, left-back Ulisses Garcia made his injury comeback last time out against Saint-Etienne as a replacement and might be available this weekend.

Regarding Le Havre, Andy Logbo returned to action with a late replacement appearance against Stade Briochin after missing more than a year due to a cruciate ligament injury.

The forward might not start on Sunday, but if Andre Ayew or Antoine Joujou start to feel tired, he might end up playing a few minutes later.
