Sunday's round eight of Ligue 1 action will see Marseille welcome Le Havre to Stade Velodrome in search of their first victory under new manager Gennaro Gattuso.

With a victory this weekend at home, Les Olympiens, who are currently in the bottom half of the division, might pass the visiting team.

Recent results highlight a decline in form, and Marseille need a major turnaround to remain in Europe next season.

Due to this, Marcelino resigned in late September, but Gattuso's appointment didn't immediately change the situation; the Olympians haven't achieved victory under the Italian.

Le Havre and Marseille have not met in a league match since 2009, however Marseille has won the last six encounters. In their most recent encounter, Marseille prevailed 3-1 in the Coupe de France.Marseille had nine points after their first seven games, but they haven't had a league victory since beating Brest on August 26. Their most recent defeats were at the hands of Monaco and Paris St. Germain. It was the freshly promoted team's first loss since the second matchweek of the season when Le Havre lost to Lille last weekend.Nabil Alioui of Le Havre is joint-third in Ligue 1's overall scoring standings with four goals so far this season.

The last two weeks have seen a downward trend in Marseille's graph. They have lost all five of their games in all competitions as a result. They will most likely enter the relegation zone in the upcoming weeks if they do not correct this issue.

Le Havre's excellent four-game unbeaten streak came to an end in their most recent game, a 2-0 loss to Lille. Keep in mind that they have a strong unblemished record this season on the road.

It's vital to remember that both clubs last faced off in 2012's Coupe de France. Le Havre has a lengthy history of competition in the second division. Consequently, the two sides' most recent Ligue 1 match was played in 2009.

This summer, Marseille will undergo yet another somewhat pointless reconstruction as Marcelino will take the position of Igor Tudor and a number of eye-catching newcomers, including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Iliman Ndiaye. In strange circumstances, Marcelino already left the team; Gennaro Gattuso, a former manager of AC Milan and Napoli, has taken his position.

The first two games under Gattuso's leadership were interesting for outside observers while frustrating for Marseille supporters. After losing 3-2 to Monaco away from home last weekend, where they had also taken the lead, they lost a two-goal lead to draw with Brighton & Hove Albion at home in the group stages of the UEFA Europa League in the middle of the week.

Last season, Le Havre won Ligue 2 and was promoted to the French top division for the first time in more than 15 years. They have started rather well, pushing toward the top-half of the standings after a successful summer transfer window that saw the additions of players like Daler Kuzyayev and Mohamed Bayo.

However, they do enter this game coming off a 2-0 loss to Lille at home in their most recent game, which took place last weekend. Both goals were scored just a few minutes apart after halftime. The results of their first seven Ligue 1 games thus far have been two wins, three draws, and two losses.

This resulted in Marcelino stepping down from his position in late September, but the arrival of Gattuso hasn't brought about an immediate transformation in their performance – the team, known as the Olympians, is yet to secure a victory under the Italian's leadership. On Thursday night, Gattuso, the former AC Milan and Napoli boss, came close to securing a win in the Europa League, but Brighton & Hove Albion managed to recover from being two goals behind and held them to a 2-2 draw.

Gattuso's team had two separate leads against Monaco in their seventh-round match (1-0 and 2-1), only to lose 3-2 after giving up both advantages, exposing their vulnerability. While Marseille is demonstrating their scoring potential under the new management, they need to shore up their defense to protect leads if they aim to turn the corner.

As for the newcomers, Le Havre, their return to Ligue 1 after a 14-year absence has been satisfactory after seven games, with only two losses suffered under the guidance of Luka Elsner. The most recent of these defeats occurred last weekend, a 2-0 loss at home to Lille, which marked the end of a four-game unbeaten streak for the Dean Club.

Le Havre has secured two victories in Ligue 1 this season, both of them at Stade Oceane. However, they have yet to experience a defeat in their away matches, having played out three consecutive draws on the road. This statistic theoretically gives Elsner's team a much-needed boost in confidence in their prospects, especially considering that the home side, under Gattuso, appears to have defensive vulnerabilities and recently participated in European competitions.

Whether this will lead to Le Havre achieving their first-ever victory against Marseille remains uncertain, but it's possible for them to secure at least a point and put an end to their six-game losing streak in all competitions against the Olympiens.
