After returning from the international break with their sights set on securing a top-six finish, Napoli and Atalanta BC will clash at Stadio Maradona this Saturday.

Napoli, the former champions of Italy, are trailing Atalanta by two points in the race for European qualification, albeit having played one more match. However, there's been a noticeable improvement since the arrival of new management.

In their previous match before the international break, Napoli managed to salvage a 1-1 draw against Inter Milan, who are likely to clinch the Serie A title this season. The late equalizer came from Juan Jesus, a former Inter defender. However, there was controversy surrounding accusations of racist language directed towards Francesco Acerbi, which were later denied by Italian football's sports judge. In response, Napoli has decided not to sport the regular 'Keep Racism Out' badge during this weekend's fixture.

Despite their elimination from the Champions League by Barcelona, Napoli has shown signs of resurgence under interim manager Francesco Calzona. Calzona, who is temporarily leading the team before taking charge of Slovakia for Euro 2024, has overseen just one defeat in seven matches since his appointment. This streak marks Napoli's best unbeaten run in Serie A since early last year when they embarked on an eight-game winning streak en route to the title.

While still trailing Inter by a significant 31 points in the Serie A standings, Napoli's recent form suggests they are poised for a strong finish under Calzona's guidance.

The Partenopei have failed to live up to expectations at home this season under three different head managers, but they will now look to extend a seven-game winning streak at Stadio Maradona that dates back to December.

Napoli's primary goal on Saturday is to get a win that moves them above their rivals in the table. The team has won their past four league games against Atalanta, including the 2-1 triumph in Bergamo earlier this season.

Atalanta's most recent appearance in Serie A was three weeks ago, but a tragic incident led to their last fixture being postponed just before kick-off: Fiorentina director Joe Barone fell ill and later passed away. Consequently, their latest competitive action was a comeback victory against Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League last-16 tie. Goals from Ademola Lookman and Gianluca Scamacca secured a 3-2 aggregate win, setting up an exciting quarter-final clash against Liverpool.

Despite this European success, Gian Piero Gasperini's team has struggled in Serie A lately, earning only two points from their last four matches. They now face the risk of going five games without a league victory for the first time since February 2022. Currently in sixth place with 10 games remaining, Atalanta trails fourth-placed Bologna by seven points and rejuvenated Roma by four. Securing fifth place could still ensure a spot in the expanded Champions League next year, and they have a game in hand over most teams except Fiorentina.

Furthermore, Atalanta will soon face Fiorentina twice in a Coppa Italia semi-final, with the first leg scheduled for next Wednesday at Stadio Franchi.

After being absent from the match against Inter and Nigeria's recent international games, Napoli's forward Victor Osimhen is set to return to action this Saturday afternoon, facing one of his preferred opponents.

Osimhen, last year's Capocannoniere, particularly enjoys playing against Atalanta. He scored his first Serie A goal against them in October 2020 and has been directly involved in five goals across five encounters. Notably, he also assisted in securing a win in November's previous fixture against them.

However, Atalanta's standout player, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, suffered a groin injury on Tuesday night while aiding Georgia in securing their first major finals berth through the Euro 2024 playoffs.

On the other hand, Teun Koopmeiners and Ademola Lookman have been Atalanta's top performers in Serie A this season, scoring ten and eight goals respectively.

Both Koopmeiners and Lookman are expected to start at the Stadio Maradona, although Koopmeiners has been dealing with a calf issue picked up during international duty.
