Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United, who are both engaged in a tough competition to advance to the Champions League knockout stages, will meet again at Parc des Princes on Tuesday night. Neither team can afford another loss.
Newcastle is just two points behind PSG in second place in Group F, where the two lost their most recent match. Thus, the Magpies would move ahead of their distinguished hosts in the standings with a rematch of their 4-1 victory on Tyneside in October.Appropriately for this year's "Group of Death," a quartet consisting of PSG, Newcastle, AC Milan, and Borussia Dortmund appears destined for an intense finale, with advancement to the round of 16 possibly hanging in the balance.
Going into the penultimate round of games, all four are separated by just three points, meaning that each team still controls their own destiny. Paris Saint-Germain is aware that two victories from two games would be enough to advance.
Although things might have turned out better, the French champions lost 2-1 to Milan earlier this month at San Siro after goals from Olivier Giroud and Rafael Leao cancelled out Milan Skriniar's early opening strike.
As a result, PSG has now lost three straight away games in Europe's top competition, which is a first since 2018. They have also lost two of their past three Champions League group games, which is as many as they had in the previous eighteen.
The Ligue 1 leaders have lost six of their last eight Champions League encounters with English clubs, including the last two, most notably a humiliating 4-1 loss at St James' Park earlier this season. They will face Newcastle in a much anticipated rematch at a crowded Parc des Princes.
In terms of securing a top-two berth in Group F, another loss would put Luis Enrique's team in jeopardy, although they have been playing well at home in preparation for Tuesday's match.
PSG returned to action on Friday night after the international break, hosting Monaco in the French capital. Prior to kickoff, PSG's lead over the principality club was just three points.Enrique's squad won 5-2 to secure their status atop the Ligue 1 standings. Captain Kylian Mbappe scored from the penalty spot, and his club has now won seven of their past eight games, scoring three goals or more in each of those victories.
In the Premier League, where a mix of injuries and subpar play has left the North-East club outside of the crucial top five, Newcastle has been unable to duplicate such a run.
Before playing Chelsea this weekend, the Magpies had only won one top-flight match in a month, but that victory came against title-chasing Arsenal. They had also suffered back-to-back losses to Borussia Dortmund.
Eddie Howe's team won 4-1, regaining confidence before they resume Champions League action. Tyneside's goals came from Anthony Gordon, Joelinton, and Jamaal Lascelles, with the visitors tying the score halfway through the first half.
Despite their most recent 2-0 loss in Germany, Newcastle is only three points behind Group F leaders Dortmund. However, to advance to the round of sixteen, they will probably need to win their final two games.
They've only won two of their nine road games this season, and they've yet to score an away goal in Europe. They also drew goalless with Milan on the first day of play. Now, they're headed to France.
The weight of history will also be against Howe's injury-plagued team this week when they take on PSG in Paris; Newcastle has only triumphed in one of their previous seven away games against Ligue 1 teams, and none since November 2004.
