Rangers know that a victory is necessary to maintain any kind of pressure on Celtic when they visit Kilmarnock on Tuesday afternoon.

Kilmarnock finished 2023 with an eight-point deficit to the leaders in the Scottish Premiership, while the home team is currently in fourth place following a sustained run of victories.

Even though Philippe Clement has enjoyed some success in his brief time at Rangers, he would have been focused on this weekend's Old Firm game.

Despite Rangers' status as the underdogs at Parkhead, Clement was extremely unhappy with the way his team lost 2-1 and the decisions that were made against them.

The consequences of that have not yet been fully realized, but right now the main concern should be keeping Rangers from falling more behind their competitors than they currently have.

Even if an eight-point deficit with two games remaining is by no means disastrous at this point, it does raise the stakes before matches like this one, especially as Celtic's match at St Mirren won't begin until after the Ibrox match is over.

Rangers have winning their last five league games at Ibrox going into this game, but they won't be overlooking the season's surprise player.

Kilmarnock, which placed 10th in the 2022–23 season, is now vying for a position in the Europa League or Europa Conference League qualifiers. This is less than six months after their last season.

Since December 6, the squad has gone six games without a loss, winning one against Celtic and accruing 14 points overall. The frustrating thing is that the teams that have dropped points are those in the lower half of the standings.

Following Saturday's 2-2 draw at Dundee, supporters had mixed feelings as they exited Rugby Park. Kilmarnock had grabbed the lead seconds earlier but had conceded a last-gasp equalizer with six minutes remaining.

Despite their present fourth-place standing, Derek McInnes' club has five Scottish Premiership matchups remaining, including trips to Rangers and Celtic. He understands that his team cannot afford to take a break if they are to maintain their hopes of making an uncommon appearance on the continent.
