When Monaco travels to play Real Madrid next, they will aim to keep their lead in the EuroLeague. They are currently in 13th place in the rankings after 16 rounds of play, four games ahead of their hosts. See our prediction for this match by reading on.

Last time out in the competition, Real Madrid snapped a three-game losing streak in Europe. Despite their inconsistent play this season, Chus Matteo's team defeated Paris Club 96-85 on the road.

With the victory, they moved up to 7-9 and were still within striking distance of the playoff spots. Real Madrid averages 84.1 points, but they give up a nearly identical amount at 83.3 points.

In the last away fixture, Real Madrid won the match against Paris playing 96-85 where focused on their seventh match of the season and dumps down their season overall result in the EuroLeague like 7-9. The decisive effect in the game was provided by Facundo Campazzo, who scored 19 points and Mario Hezonja, for which 17 points were scored.

Everyone knows that Real Madrid has been playing very poorly this season and has not come close to the level they demonstrated in May this year when they reached EuroLeague finals or last year when they celebrated the championship. The reasons for this may be linked back to high attrition during the summer such as Guerschon Yabusele’s departure that Real Madrid has not replaced—While Serge Ibaka is coming from Bayern to strengthen the Real Madrid frontcourt.

Moreover, Mario Hezonja started the season with a virus, Dzanan Musa and Usman Garuba suffered a minor injuries and Andreas Feliz, signed as Campazzo’s back up missed the game. There was very little space for great performances during the first games of the season, although their problems have been bigger than that. Nevertheless, in their final match they were able to overcome all these problems, exploiting the fact that the latter’s top player was unable to play the game, T.J. Shorts.

This win is important, especially given the difficulty of winning games on the road this season for Real Madrid – every point is valuable – even more so because Chus Mateo’s position is under pressure and his future in the team’s staff depends on the outcomes. Not surprisingly the game in Paris was from the easier ones for Real Madrid as they only broke the opponent’s defence on the last ten minutes and following the second quarter where they conceded 31 points.

In the teams’ next meeting Real Madrid needs to take the upper hand in the frontcourt positions to be dangerous for Monaco. The visiting team this season under Vassilis Spanoulis has been very fluid and has been able to breakdown opponents when their center line takes charge.

Monaco triumphed in the earlier meeting against Bayern at home by a decisive 93-74 score, which was the 11th victory in EuroLeague for the Monegasque and an additional step towards occupying a higher position in the best European tournament. The main scorers with fourteen points were Georgios Papagiannis and Mike James who helped the team clinch the victory.

Monaco has divided their season into two parts pre-and post- Vassilis Spanoulis. Although the team was playing well under Sasa Obradovic the management of the club felt the need for change and decided to hire their home grown legend as the new head coach for the club. Mike James has changed dramatically for the better after his arrival at the college. Spanoulis was an authoritarian figure on the bench compared to Obradovic, but the latter knew how to make the best out of even a EuroLeague player.

Spanoulis has understood that most EuroLeague teams are overly reliant on three-point shooting, which becomes an issue when the shots do not go in. To this end, he has been bolstering contributions from Georgios Papagiannis and Donatas Motiejūnas. This was evident especially against Bayern hence efficiency-Demakis Papagiannis contributed 14 points in 12minutes and Motiejūnas chipped in with 8 points in 10minutes. Also, there was evidence that Monaco took advantage of the Bayern’s turnovers and they received 17 while they gave just 5.

On Match Day 15, Monaco climbed to the top of the standings, and they will be keen to stay there. The 11-game winning French powerhouses defeated Bayern 93-74 at home to claim three straight European titles.

They could lose their top spot if they lose here because they are tied with their French rivals, Paris, on games won. Monaco defeated Madrid by a score of 24 points in their most recent match.
