Real Madrid, the reigning champions of La Liga, aim to extend their impressive streak to 10 consecutive victories in Spain's premier football league as they face off against Villarreal, who are vying for a spot in European competitions, at Estadio de la Ceramica this Sunday evening.

Having secured the league title in early May, Real Madrid now have their sights set on the upcoming Champions League final. Meanwhile, Villarreal, despite a challenging start to the 2023-24 season, are still in contention for a seventh-place finish in the league standings.

Initially struggling in the first half of the season, Villarreal's recent performances have propelled them into contention for European qualification next season, a scenario that seemed improbable for much of the campaign.

Under Marcelino's guidance, Villarreal currently occupy the eighth position in the league table, trailing seventh-placed Real Betis by five points. Real Betis presently holds the spot for the Conference League playoff round.

Moreover, Villarreal find themselves just six points adrift of sixth-placed Real Sociedad. However, Real Sociedad holds the advantage in their head-to-head encounters. Consequently, Villarreal's highest achievable finish this season is seventh, contingent upon Real Betis faltering in their remaining two matches.

With a 1-0 victory against Girona just before to the game, the Yellow Submarines have won four of their previous five league games, including their past two at home against Rayo Vallecano and Sevilla, and have scored six goals in those contests.

In front of their own fans, Marcelino's team has failed to be consistent this season, winning seven, drawing four, and losing seven of the eighteen league games they have played. However, they have won four of the past five games played at Estadio de la Ceramica and have only lost one of the previous nine.

Los Blancos might make history on Sunday if they defeat Alaves and tie the record for the longest unbeaten streak in La Liga, which is thirty. The previous record was set between May 1988 and April 1989.

In order to make sure his players are at their best for the Champions League final, Ancelotti has had the luxury of rotating his squad in recent games.

After winning 4-1 in the rematch between the two teams back in December, Real Madrid will be looking to complete a league double against Villarreal this year.

Real Madrid clinched their title triumph on May 4th, securing their berth in the Champions League final by edging past Bayern Munich 2-1 in the semi-final's second leg at Bernabeu.

Under Carlo Ancelotti's leadership, Real Madrid showcased their dominance with resounding victories over Granada (4-0) and Alaves (5-0) in La Liga. They are now gearing up to face Villarreal and Real Betis in their remaining league fixtures before their showdown with Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final on June 1st at Wembley Stadium.

Throughout this season, Real Madrid has indisputably been the standout team in La Liga. Their stellar record speaks volumes: 29 wins, six draws, and only one loss in 36 matches, amassing a staggering 93 points. They boast both the highest goal-scoring tally, finding the net 83 times, and the stingiest defense, conceding a mere 22 goals.
