Bayern Munich begin their Bundesliga campaign on Friday when Werder Bremen welcomes Germany's defending champions, who might win their 12th straight championship.

Bayern has a point to prove at Weserstadion, where they have won on their last 14 visits and Werder accumulated the fewest home points in the league last season, after their humiliating loss in the DFL-Supercup.

Following a preseason that included a fast trip to Singapore and Japan as well as a 27-0 victory, Bayern Munich resumed competitive play last week when they faced RB Leipzig in the DFL-Supercup.

German football's opening match saw Thomas Tuchel's team drop a shocking 3-0 decision to the DFB-Pokal champions, and Harry Kane made his Bundesliga debut as a second-half substitute shortly after completing his transfer from Tottenham Hotspur.

The England captain is scheduled to make his debut on Friday night when Bayern plays their favorite team in an effort to bounce back from such a defeat and begin their quest for a 12th consecutive league title with a victory.

Die Roten's last loss in this matchup occurred back in September 2008. Werder Bremen haven't defeated Die Roten in 31 competitive games. During that time, Die Roten have won 27 times and scored close to a century goals.

Additionally, since 2013, Tuchel has a nine-game winning streak against Werder. On the final day of the previous season, Tuchel narrowly guided Bayern to the top spot.

Last season, Bayern was once again Germany's best away team, defeating Tuchel's former club Borussia Dortmund and winning the championship with 33 points earned away from home. Bremen, in comparison, had 10 losses at home. Despite a decline in performance, this was the case.

The odds are unquestionably in Bayern's favor going into the clubs' showdown on opening night given the fact that Bayern has never lost their first game in the past 21 years.

Werder Bremen has lost more league games versus Bayern Munich than any other team—60 to date—and they haven't won the opening match in any of their last eight Bundesliga seasons.
Die Grun-Weissen lost to the Bavarians at home late in the previous season by a score of 2-1, and they ultimately finished 13th in their first season back in the top division.

Only one of their final 12 Bundesliga games was won, and they lost eight of them, leaving Ole Werner's team just three points clear of a playoff berth for relegation.

Last week, 10-man Werder lost again in their first game back in competition, losing 3-2 to 3. Liga team Viktoria Koln in the DFB-Pokal after giving up three goals in the final 20 minutes, including one in stoppage time.

Then, a fight for survival may be in the cards as Bremen looks to Niclas Fullkrug, who completed last season as the joint-top scorer in the Bundesliga with 15 goals, to lead them to safety.

In 2022–23, only Frankfurt's Randal Kolo Muani managed more goal involvements (26) than either Musiala (22) or Bremen's Niclas Fullkrug (21). Jamal Musiala is set to team up with star signing Harry Kane for the visitors on Friday evening. Musiala scored Bayern Munich's title-winning goal on a dramatic final day last season.

Before relocating to Bavaria, Kane scored 213 goals in 320 Premier League games. He now joins Kim Min-jae and Raphael Guerreiro as newcomers to Bayern, joining a roster that is currently without Sadio Mane, Yann Sommer, and Lucas Hernandez. Guerreiro, though, will be unable to participate due to a calf issue.

The Austrian international Konrad Laimer has also joined on a free transfer, and he will compete with Leon Goretzka for a spot in central midfield. While Manuel Neuer, the team's starting goalkeeper, is still out injured, Sven Ulreich fills in after Sommer left for Inter.

Naby Keita was acquired by Werder Bremen from Liverpool earlier this summer, but the former Leipzig midfielder is currently out with a groin injury incurred during preseason.

After receiving a red card in last week's cup loss, Amos Pieper was suspended; however, on Friday, club captain Marco Friedl should take his position in the home team's back three.

Another newcomer, former Sampdoria striker and Poland international Dawid Kownacki, might support Fullkrug up front.
