Bayern turns Celtic's Champions League dream into a late nightmare.

Bayern Munich equalised in stoppage time to go to the round of 16, turning one of Celtic's most memorable Champions League nights into a heartbreaking finale.

Callum McGregor, Daizen Maeda, and Nicolas Kuhn all came near early in the game as Brendan Rodgers' team attempted to win their first-ever knockout stage encounter at the Allianz Arena. Harry Kane did start for Bayern, but he was substituted off at halftime.

Kuhn silenced the home crowd and gave the Scottish Premiership winners a well-earned lead in the second half as Celtic's brilliant performance took advantage of some shoddy defence.

After Kasper Schmeichel denied Leon Goretzka, Alphonso Davies bundled the ball into the net as Celtic, who haven't won away in the competition since 2017, appeared to hold out for extra time. This was the cruellest manner for the Hoops to lose the playoffs.

Vincent Kompany's team advances to the round of 16, where they will play either Bayer Leverkusen or Atletico Madrid.

From bliss to pain

Celtic's work was enormous in scope. The Hoops have never won a competitive match in Germany, while Bayern has an undefeated home record in the Bundesliga this season.

In the Allianz Arena, Rodgers started January additions Jota and Jeffrey Schlupp, benching Adam Idah and Greg Taylor.

The visitors applied some early pressure and created opportunities they should have seized after Serge Gnabry's effort was stopped by Alistair Johnston.

During the first 20 minutes, McGregor cut a shot over the bar, Raphael Guerriero knocked Kuhn's effort off the line, and Arne Engels' cross just missed Maeda's touch.

Then, before Bayern threatened once more, the Japan international shot unexpectedly wide from the edge of the box, but Kasper Schmeichel was there to stop Harry Kane's strong attempt from going in.

Before Kane slammed a shot off the bar shortly before halftime, Celtic was holding their own after Schmeichel denied Michael Olise and Leon Goretzka.

Kingsley Coman therefore had to take the place of the England captain, who had been doubtful due to a face injury.

Although it was a setback for Bayern, they continued to pose a threat after the interval thanks to a spectacular save by Schmeichel that kept Goretzka out.

Before Celtic lost Jota to an eye injury and Idah took his place, Stanisic slammed a ball into the side netting and Musiala missed a shot.

Then, taking advantage of Kim Min-jae's poor defence, Kuhn silenced the home crowd by firing low past Manuel Neuer and into the bottom corner to give Celtic the lead.

Leroy Sane and Davies were substituted for Gnabry and Guerreiro in Kompany's response, and Kuhn was taken off the pitch due to a calf injury minutes after he scored.

After that, the Bundesliga leaders started to up the pressure once more. Sane had an opportunity, but Schmeichel stopped Kimmich's deflected attempt after Olise's free-kick was blocked. Goretzka's header had spun wide.

The home team forced several corners, but Celtic remained composed and gave up little as they attempted to force at least extra time.

However, their aspirations were dashed by a heartbreaking late goal. The game's last chance came when a pass into the box prompted Schmeichel to make a fantastic save from Sane's header, but Davies jumped on the rebound to divert Cameron Carter-Vicker's attempted clearing into the net.

Brendan Rodgers, the Celtics manager:

"In the end, it was not what the players deserved. They put a lot of effort into the game. We also gave them room and didn't reveal too much.

"I thought we had the better opportunities in the game and had excellent, high-quality plays. It was a very courageous performance, but ultimately regrettable.

"My main takeaway from this season is that we have regained our European reputation. At times, we have demonstrated true quality.

"The next step for us is to hopefully further develop the team come next season. But for us, this season has been fantastic. Making us an experienced team at this level is my goal.

"I said to the players that I came back here to make progress in Europe and if I judge that tonight they have given me everything and now it's about learning for that and finish off our season well and get back into the Champions League next season."

Among the most brutal defeats

Callum McGregor, the Celtics captain, addressing Amazon Prime:

"It's among the most brutal [football] experiences I've had." The guys gave it their all and battled to the very end against a formidable Bayern team.

"I must admit that I'm incredibly proud of the players and the way they performed and carried themselves, even if football can be harsh at times and you don't always get what you deserve.

"We have no regrets when we leave that pitch. Although it's a huge victory, I believe we should feel proud of ourselves.

"We were supposed to try to nick the next one as well, and we believed in ourselves even if we had to play extra time.

"I think anybody watching that game of football tonight would see a really good Celtic team."
