Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich will aim to restore their form and confidence after a devastating UEFA Champions League loss to Barcelona when they take on VfL Bochum at Vonovia Ruhrstadion this Sunday in the Bundesliga.

Currently, Bochum sits at the bottom of the league table in 18th place, having amassed just one point from seven matches. They are six points adrift of the fourth-placed team, which secures automatic promotion to the Bundesliga. In contrast, Bayern leads the table with 17 points from the same number of matches and remains one of only two teams in the top division still unbeaten.

Bochum's last outing was a defeat against Hoffenheim on October 19. Despite dominating much of the match, they could only find the net once, even with an expected goals (xG) tally close to 3 and five significant chances created.

The team has generated the joint 11th highest number of big chances in the league, yet they have only scored eight goals, the second-lowest total in the division.

Peter Zeidler, who managed Bochum during the Hoffenheim match, was dismissed shortly after, leading to Markus Feldhoff and Murat Ura taking over management duties on an interim basis. They now face the challenge of guiding a side that has gone winless in its last eight competitive outings, suffering seven defeats and managing just one draw.

Bochum’s Bundesliga form has been dismal, with 14 losses in their last 19 matches, including five defeats, three draws, and only one victory in their last nine home league games.

On the other hand, Bayern comes into this match following a 4-1 defeat to Hansi Flick’s Barcelona, where Raphinha netted a hat-trick and former Bayern player Robert Lewandowski also scored.

After the match, Kompany expressed frustration, stating there was no justification for his team's performance and acknowledging that the offensive setup may have been overly ambitious.

Bayern now finds themselves in 23rd position in the table after losing two of their last three Champions League matches. However, they are still at the top of the Bundesliga, having secured victories in all three of their league encounters against Bayer Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Stuttgart, the runners-up from last season.

In their latest league match, Bayern delivered an impressive 4-0 win against Stuttgart on October 19, highlighted by Harry Kane’s outstanding hat-trick.

The Bavarians have scored 17 goals while conceding just six in their past four away Bundesliga matches, winning three and drawing one.

Bochum will finish the 2023–24 season without goalkeeper Manuel Riemann, who remains sidelined from first-team training due to a dispute with the club over playing time.

In light of Bayern's heavy defeat to Barcelona, Kompany is likely to field a strong starting lineup to bounce back quickly.

However, Hiroki Ito and Josip Stanisic are not expected to return until mid-November, and the absences of Sacha Boey and Aleksandar Pavlovic will last until December.

VfL Bochum has endured a challenging season, managing only one point from seven games, placing them at the bottom of the Bundesliga. While they have been able to create scoring opportunities, their defense has faltered, conceding 17 goals in seven matches.

The host team’s last three matches have ended in defeat, following their sole point from a 2-2 draw at home against Holsten Kiel. They suffered a 4-2 loss at Dortmund, a 3-1 defeat at home to Wolfsburg, and another 3-1 setback away to Hoffenheim.

Conversely, Bayern has accumulated 17 points from their seven matches and is back on top of the standings. The Bavarians have scored 17 of their 24 goals away from home, averaging over three goals per game.
