Fulham 3-1 Brighton: Marco Silva's team moves up to sixth place in the Premier League thanks to two goals from Alex Iwobi.
At Craven Cottage, Fulham defeated Brighton; Alex Iwobi gave Fulham the lead early by correcting Bart Verbruggen's mistake; In the second half, Carlos Baleba volleys Brighton even; Matt O'Riley's own goal gives Fulham the lead again. Lately, Iwobi finishes up points.
With two goals in Fulham's 3-1 victory over Brighton, Alex Iwobi maintained his scorching form and helped the team move up to sixth place in the Premier League.
Despite playing deeper than normal in central midfield, the 28-year-old scored three goals and provided two assists in his last four games first pressing high to take advantage of a Brighton error in the fourth minute and then curling in a late third for the home team.
After losing early due to a mistake by Bart Verbruggen, Brighton, whose manager Fabian Hurzeler was serving a one-match touchline ban, had dominated the first half. Bernd Leno denied Joao Pedro from a close range, and the goalie subsequently stopped Simon Adringra's close-range attempt.
But 11 minutes into the second half, they rightfully tied the score when Carlos Baleba scored a left-footed volley from the edge of the box into the bottom-left corner after Jan Paul van Hecke's long cross onto Pedro was deflected down into his path. Baleba then celebrated with a somersault.
Before Fulham substitute Andreas Pereira's corner was deflected into the Brighton net by their own midfielder Matt O'Riley, the game was still in the balance.
With three minutes remaining, Iwobi secured the points with a flawless effort into the bottom-right corner, ensuring he would steal the show.
Iwobi: I ought to be getting more goals!
"After our most recent match against the Spurs, we wanted to record a victory. Our property is the only ideal location for it. It was fantastic to get goals for the squad, but I should be getting more.
"In training, we observe the ability. We have more energy coming into Arsenal, who are playing well, thanks to this performance."
Hurzeler encourages Verbruggen to grow from mistakes.
Rock-bottom only Verbruggen has been at the centre of Southampton's (9) more Premier League mistakes that have resulted in goals than Brighton's (6).
The custodian gave Fulham the lead with a bad back-row ball that let Iwobi score the first goal. He has been responsible for three goals, which is tied for the most in the league.
After being heavily rotated with Jason Steele under Roberto De Zerbi, Verbruggen has been Hurzeler's number one, and the Brighton manager is supporting his man.
"It's exactly what I demand from Bart, the players from the back, to find solutions on the ground and we have to reflect and we have to give him feedback about the mistakes," he stated.
However, I will never pass judgement on him because I really believe that if the players figure out answers on the ground, they will get better. By committing these errors, the players will also get better since they will develop both personally and as players.
"If you don't do mistakes in football there won't happen any goals, so we keep working with him, we keep trying to bring more clarity in these situations and then hopefully it won't happen again."
Silva: Three major points: Iwobi performed incredibly well.
Marco Silva, the Fulham manager, stated:
"In a difficult game, we scored three crucial points. With the early goal, we were off to the best start possible, but Brighton made it very tough for us in the first half. We had trouble connecting with the wide guys because they started with three at the back.
"We were much better in the second half. We should have done a better job of preparing for the long ball after giving up in a flash. The shot from the box's edge was good. A tough game, but we won by a significant margin.
"Alex Iwobi and I played at a different position. He did a fantastic job and is an offensive player.
Hurzeler: We weren't worthy of losing.
Fabian Hurzeler, the head coach of Brighton, stated:
"As everyone knows, we deserved much better than that outcome. We made many opportunities. That was really disappointing because we gave up goals from an own goal from a set-piece, an easy mistake in the build-up, and I can't recall any other opportunities.
"The squad performed admirably when in possession. We needed to work on a few things when we weren't in possession, but when we were, we had solid patterns. We need to be more clinical and clean enough in the opponent's box, and you get penalised if you don't score when you should.
