Inter Miami is on the verge of securing a place in the last 16 of the CONCACAF Champions Cup for the second consecutive season. They can achieve this milestone by simply avoiding defeat against Sporting Kansas City on Tuesday at Chase Stadium. A narrow 1-0 victory in the first leg last Wednesday has left Kansas City in a must-win scenario as they enter this crucial encounter.

The first-leg match saw Miami making the most of their opportunities, converting their only shot on target into the winning goal. This result marked the end of a two-game losing streak in this competition for Miami, who remain undefeated in 2025 under the guidance of Javier Mascherano. 

In their opening fixture of the new MLS season, Miami demonstrated resilience reminiscent of their performances last year. Trailing late against New York City FC, they salvaged a dramatic 2-2 draw with a goal deep into stoppage time, snatching a point when defeat seemed inevitable. 

Their only Champions Cup victory at Chase Stadium came in the previous season when they secured a 3-1 win over Nashville SC, ultimately advancing with a 5-3 aggregate score. Miami also equaled the MLS record for regular-season victories in the non-shootout era last year, amassing 22 wins. However, their recent form against MLS opponents has been inconsistent, managing just one victory in their last five encounters, including friendlies and playoff matches. That lone win came against Sporting Kansas City in the first leg of this tie.

Chase Stadium has not been the fortress Miami would have hoped for in recent months. Since their 2-1 triumph over Atlanta United in the opening game of their best-of-three playoff series last season, they have failed to win at home, losing the decisive second leg against Atlanta 3-2 before drawing 2-2 with New York City FC last weekend.

Meanwhile, Sporting Kansas City has struggled to convert their efforts into victories, a recurring issue that plagued them last season. Against Miami in the first leg, they put up a determined fight but lacked the decisive moment of brilliance needed to break through. Close defeats were a common theme for Sporting in 2024, as they lost 12 regular-season matches by a single goal. This trend continued into 2025, with back-to-back 1-0 defeats, first to Miami and then to Austin FC over the weekend, where they conceded a late goal.

Kansas City's attacking struggles have been evident in recent outings. Their last goals came in a pre-season fixture against Charlotte FC, which ended in a 3-2 defeat. Since then, they have failed to score in five consecutive matches. If they are to keep their Champions Cup aspirations alive, they must overcome a significant hurdle—winning an away match in this competition. The last time they achieved this feat was in February 2019 when they secured a 2-0 victory over Toluca in the round of 16.

Recent history against MLS opposition has not been kind to Sporting Kansas City either. They are winless in their last six competitive matches against league opponents, with five of those encounters ending in defeat. Furthermore, their only previous visit to Chase Stadium saw them take an early lead in the ninth minute, only to concede three unanswered goals and ultimately lose 3-2.

As they prepare for this decisive second leg, Sporting Kansas City faces an uphill battle. Their inability to find the back of the net and a history of narrow losses suggest they will need to produce something special to overturn the deficit. On the other hand, Miami, buoyed by their solid form under Mascherano and a favorable aggregate score, will look to capitalize on their home advantage and seal their place in the next round.
