Man City 1–2. Man Utd: Pep Guardiola's problems are made worse by Ruben Amorim's incredible late comeback, which sees Amad Diallo score the game-winning goal.
Amad Diallo's goal and Bruno Fernandes' penalty give Manchester United a thrilling 2-1 victory over Man City in the Premier League; Josko Gvardiol's header put Pep Guardiola's team up until the 88th minute, but they faltered in the closing minutes.
At the Etihad Stadium, Manchester United pulled off a spectacular comeback, defeating crisis-ridden Manchester City 2-1 thanks to a goal from Amad Diallo in the closing seconds.
Josko Gvardiol's header in the first half had put Ruben Amorim's team behind until the 88th minute, when a dull derby came to life after Matheus Nunes fouled Amad after a shoddy backpass, giving Bruno Fernandes the penalty.
Shortly after, Lisandro Martinez's ball over the top found its way to the great Amad, who touched it around Ederson before guiding a spectacular finish into the net from a sharp angle to silence the home crowd.
The outcome worsens Pep Guardiola's situation at Manchester City, whose team has only won one of their last 11 games across all competitions, extending the team's worst run of results since 2006.
The win, which was only Manchester United's second in the Premier League under Amorim, followed two significant decisions by the new manager, who excluded strikers Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho from his team for selection-related reasons.
Amad was promoted to a more advanced position as a result of their absences, and he rightfully reprimanded the struggling hosts for not adding to Gvardiol's opening goal, which was headed home from Kevin De Bruyne's deflected cross during one of the first half's rare opportunities.
After Amad saw Ederson push a flicked header over the post in the second period, Fernandes dinked a one-on-one chance wide, seemingly giving Guardiola's team a chance to stumble over the finish line to victory. However, United was able to celebrate a stunning triumph thanks to City's most recent collapse.
The champions now sit in fifth place, nine points behind leaders Liverpool, who still have a game to play, and behind Nottingham Forest in fourth. Despite still being in 13th place, United has hope for a better future under Amorim.
On the'massive' victory, Amorim: We deserved it
"We have a lot of work ahead of us, but it was huge for our supporters," Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim.
"Without the two goals, our talk would be very different, but the performance would remain the same.
"The players performed admirably, in my opinion. The fact that they played the entire ninety minutes is crucial. We deserved this victory, in my opinion. We had a successful day.
"You sensed that we were on the verge of scoring. As we ran more, we increased our speed. We did a great job of controlling [Erling] Haaland and the other members of City's offence.
Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford's exclusion is explained by Ruben Amorim.
"You could sense it when we scored the first one. Their desire was greater. The players deserve congratulations. We really needed it.
"It was nothing special," Amorim continued, referring to Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford. A new week means a new life. They will compete for a spot on the team if they practice hard and outperform the other players in every circumstance, both on and off the pitch.
"We definitely need Garna and Rash, because they are really skilled. It was not a matter of discipline. Simply said, we need to raise our standards. They'll adjust to this.
In praise of "unstoppable," Fernandes Amad
In an interview with Sky Sports, Bruno Fernandes praised Manchester United player Amad Diallo, saying: "He has been doing great things and there's a lot more to come."
"He receives the penalty and his goal because he is constantly engaged and alive. He has been excellent, but I shouldn't say much since we need him to continue at this level.
"He is unstoppable in this way.
"I'm fairly certain he can accomplish this each week. We anticipate it. When he plays for Manchester United, he is aware of the expectations. He is receiving a well-earned opportunity. The benefits are there when you take the appropriate actions at the appropriate times.
Silva: "Stupid" Man City performed like the under-15 team.
Speaking candidly about Manchester City's demise, Bernardo Silva told Sky Sports: "We completely deserved what happened."
"You can claim that they are being lucky at this level if it's just one or two games. It's not about it if there are ten games.
"My friend, if your team wins a derby by a corner in the 87th minute and the ball ends up in your 'keeper''s hands and they score a penalty...
"You should be held accountable if you make such foolish choices with three or four minutes remaining.
"There was only one team that could win, if you look at the game. However, we lost in the end, and lately, there have been a lot of games.
"We must examine ourselves. It's not based on chance. Your choices are what matter. We paid the price today when we played like the under-15s in the closing minutes.
Pep: It was given away. I need to come up with answers.
Man City manager Pep Guardiola said to Sky Sports: "Unfortunately, it occurs a lot this year. We donated a lot of items. The way we played, we weren't pleasant. We're having trouble now for different reasons than when it was so flexible. Many losses.
"We gave it our all, and the game was nearly over. Though nothing noteworthy, they enjoyed greater possession in the first half. We give away two really challenging goals.
"It is what it is. What am I supposed to say? It's not that, so we can't hold this or that player accountable. It's a difficult time of year.
"We didn't give it our all. We struggle a little and are not at our best. We are no longer playing for the week.
We didn't lost that many in two seasons before. We've now completed it in eight games. You must defend. Numerous games have been lost by us. It's challenging. We must go on, look for the answer, and try to win games.
"I don't believe it was the hardest loss in nine years. Losing in the Champions League was more difficult. But just now, we need outcomes to improve our attitude. The situation is becoming worse and worse. I need to figure out the answer. The truth is that I haven't found it yet.
