Man City manager Pep Guardiola extends his contract by two years.
The 53-year-old's contract was set to expire at the end of the current campaign, but Man City manager Pep Guardiola has agreed to a two-year extension.
Pep Guardiola has stated Manchester City’s recent troubles contributed to his decision to accept a new two-year deal which will prolong his stint as manager to more than a decade.
By the end of this season, the 53-year-old's previous contract with City was set to expire.
Although he had considered leaving at the conclusion of the season, Guardiola, who has won 18 trophies at the Etihad, including six Premier League crowns and the Champions League, said that his choice to stay at the club was influenced in part by City's recent four-game losing streak.
"Since the beginning of the season, I was thinking a lot, there were some moments, I have to be honest, I thought this should be the last one because every one is..." according to the club's website.
"However, given the circumstances and the issues we've faced over the past month, I felt that I had to leave the club and that now was not the right moment to do so.
Please don't ask me why. Perhaps the four losses were the cause, and I felt unable to go. The reason we signed was because I thought the club still wanted me or because we were together.
"Manchester City holds great significance for me. I'm in my eighth season here, and we've had so many incredible moments together. I feel a really unique connection to this football team.
"I am thrilled to be staying for two more seasons because of this.
"The owner, chairman Khaldoon, Ferran, Txiki, the players, and of course the supporters—everyone associated with Manchester City—thank you for your continued faith in and support of me. Being here has always been a privilege, a joy, and an honour.
I've said it a lot, but I have everything a manager could ask for, and I'm really grateful for that. With any luck, we can now add additional trophies to our collection. I'll be concentrating on it."
Following the club's announcement that director of football Txiki Begiristain would be departing at the end of the current campaign, the months-long rumours surrounding Guardiola's future had intensified significantly.
Long-time Guardiola ally Begiristain will be replaced by Sporting's Hugo Viana, a former Newcastle player. Resolving the doubt surrounding Guardiola's future helps to avoid more turmoil next summer, when the team is also scheduled to play in the Club World Cup.
The announcement comes at a crucial point in City's season. The champions' recent form has faltered due to injury; they have lost their previous four games across all competitions, which is the worst run in Guardiola's tenure.
The club is facing 115 accusations for allegedly violating Premier League regulations after an investigation into their financial issues, making it a challenging season off the pitch as well.
After successful stints as manager of Barcelona and Bayern Munich, Guardiola took over at City eight years ago, succeeding Manuel Pellegrini.
Khaldoon Al Mubarak, the chairman of City, expressed his happiness at the manager's choice to remain in Manchester for a further two years.
"Like every City fan, I am delighted that Pep's journey with Manchester City will continue; allowing his dedication, passion and innovative thinking to continue to shape the landscape of the game," he stated on the club's website.
"Our players and coaching staff, the culture of our Club, and the English game as a whole will all continue to directly benefit from his unquenchable desire for success and progress.
"This renewal will take Pep beyond a decade of coaching Manchester City and the opportunity to continue to re-write the managerial record books."
