Moyes' Everton crushes Spurs to put Postecoglou under strain.
Everton, led by David Moyes, crushed Tottenham's woeful defence to win 3-2, sending Ange Postecoglou's team into the relegation zone.
In the first half at Goodison Park, David Moyes' Everton destroyed Tottenham's woeful defence to win 3-2, sending Ange Postecoglou's team into the relegation zone.
As the second-worst-performing offence in the division feasted on Spurs' startling defensive frailty, the home crowd cheered with a tinge of incredulity.
It had been August since Dominic Calvert-Lewin had scored in the Premier League. Before scoring his first goal in 17 games, he twisted adolescent Archie Grey in all directions.
Iliman Ndiaye quickly sped past Radu Dragusin to smash in a second after an Orel Mangala shot was forced onto the post. According to former Tottenham defender Michael Dawson, "Spurs have been all over the place," on Sky Sports. "The defending from Dragusin is unacceptable."
Grey hooked the ball into his own net in first-half stoppage time, making matters worse. When Everton scored three goals in the first forty-five minutes against Bournemouth in February 2017, the supporters had not witnessed anything like this. Prior to Sunday, Everton had only managed 15 goals in their 20 league outings.
At halftime, Spurs abandoned their unsuccessful back-three attempt, but Calvert-Lewin could have made it 4-0 early in the second period after spinning and missing the mark after being allowed more time and space in the box. Then, in the closing moments, Everton unavoidably made things difficult for themselves.
When Jordan Pickford darted off his line, Dejan Kulusevski chipped in wonderfully, giving the travelling supporters something to cheer about. Richarlison, a former Everton player, then added another from close range in stoppage time. However, Everton persevered and produced a first league victory that boosted confidence under the new manager, Moyes.
Throughout, the Spurs fans expressed their displeasure and made repeated demands that chairman Daniel Levy quit the team. This will also bring Postecoglou's work into stark relief.
Spurs have been defeated in the north London derby, brought to extra time at Tamworth, and now humbled at Everton after that spectacular victory against Liverpool. However, they still have the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg lead to hold onto at Anfield.
Tottenham is in serious trouble as they have only won one of their last ten Premier League games and are only eight points clear of the bottom three, including four points from Everton.
Postecoglou: The second half demonstrated that the players had not given up.
"We clearly had a difficult game in the first half and set ourselves up for failure. In the second half, the players made an unsuccessful attempt to win the game back. The game was not truly under our control. Without the ball, we had trouble getting any traction. We also had a few opportunities that we perhaps ought to have taken advantage of sooner. However, it wasn't sufficient in the end.
"We only have 11 healthy players today, so we're really strained. You make an effort to reorganise somewhat. We didn't have complete control over our organisation, especially in the beginning. Everton took advantage of this a few occasions, and we paid the price. We finished strongly after having a good second half. I felt like Mikey Moore on the left side had a little more delight getting in behind, and Richarlison made a difference when he came on.
"We examine our current circumstances, which will eventually improve in terms of player availability, and then we give ourselves a chance to at least achieve some consistency in our performances and games. Continue to fight. I still believe in it and am determined to make it better. The players demonstrated in the second half that they were not giving up. We will overcome this obstacle."
David Moyes, the manager of Everton, says we could have scored more goals.
"Any victory is a good victory given the situation we're in. We performed a lot of excellent things and played pretty well in the first half, in my opinion. Perhaps they could have added a few more goals in the first half. We performed admirably and positioned ourselves favourably. Dominic also had a fantastic opportunity to make it 4-0.
However, the conclusion was unsettling. Because of the way Tottenham plays, I knew we would be under pressure if they grabbed one. Fortunately, though, we barely made it out.
"Having three points from the game makes us very happy. Although we still have a long way to go, today was a positive beginning.
