Ruben Amorim: Despite the draw against Liverpool, Bruno Fernandes concurs that the Manchester United head coach is "really mad."
Ruben Amorim, the manager of Manchester United: "I believe we should be more upset and dissatisfied than we were against Newcastle, Bournemouth, and Nottingham the other day, even though it was a point that was earned.
After Manchester United's 2-2 draw against Liverpool, captain Bruno Fernandes asked why the club couldn't consistently put up performances like that, and Ruben Amorim stated he was "really mad" to leave Anfield with just a point.
Prior to Cody Gakpo's equaliser and Mohamed Salah's penalty that appeared to have given league leaders Liverpool the win, Lisandro Martinez put United ahead early in the second half.
However, unfancied United earned a point thanks to a sweeping goal from Amad Diallo
Amorim, meanwhile, was unable to conceal his disappointment at losing at Anfield when asked if it was a positive step.
"Yes," Amorim said to Sky Sports, "because the expectations were so different from what we saw during the game."
"I think I get more mad because of the other games so it's even harder to understand some things."
Amorim responded, "This is not about the system, it's not about the technique," when asked if Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes had voiced similar reservations about the team's inability to routinely produce performances like the one at Anfield. It's about something else, and even the coach finds this difficult to comprehend.
"I believe that we should be extremely disappointed today, more so than we should have been the previous day [in the losses against] Newcastle, Bournemouth, and Nottingham [Forest], even though it was only one point that was earned.
"We will do that if we play Liverpool every day. Therefore, we must do it against any opponent and realise that we must battle fiercely to escape our predicament.
"The most important thing moving forward is how competitive we were.
"I'm happy for the performance, not happy for the result but I'm really mad because of the other games."
Amorim responded, "No, because I have to calm down and to say the right things," when asked if he had communicated that to his players. Even if we are in a challenging time, it is impossible to avoid becoming extremely angry.
"Once more, I'm pleased with the performance, but not the outcome. But it's the other games that have me furious.
"We must go forward. The boys deserve praise for their performance rather than the outcome.
Fernandes: Why isn't this something we can do each week?
Following the exciting 2-2 draw at Anfield, Bruno Fernandes likewise experienced conflicting feelings. "Criticised and fair because the position in the table says it all, we lost too many points," Fernandes said to Sky Sports when asked about the recent criticism United have received.
We need points more than they did, so even today we can't be content with a draw.
"We could have won the game in the end, but it was a fair outcome, and it was a really excellent one.
"I'm a little irritated because if we beat Liverpool, who are now leading the league and most likely the best team in the Premier League this season, at Anfield today, why can't we achieve this every week?
"Finally I did a proper performance overall and I think we need much more from ourselves to get something from this season."
