Marseille aims to strengthen their hold on second place in Ligue 1 and keep their faint title hopes alive as they head to Stade Raymond Kopa for a Sunday evening clash against Angers.

Les Olympiens got back to winning ways last weekend with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Lyon in the Choc des Olympiques, maintaining a 10-point gap behind league leaders Paris Saint-Germain.

Marseille’s championship aspirations have suffered setbacks in recent weeks, following a disappointing 1-1 draw with Strasbourg and a 2-0 defeat to Nice. Ahead of last weekend’s showdown against Lyon, anything less than three points would have jeopardized their position in the top two. However, Roberto De Zerbi’s men delivered when it mattered, in a match of contrasting halves where all five goals were scored after the break.

The stakes remain high as they prepare for Sunday’s encounter, with Marseille holding a slender three-point lead over third-placed Monaco. Meanwhile, their opponents Angers have been in remarkable form in 2025, securing 10 Ligue 1 points—the joint-highest tally in the league this year.

Marseille will depend on their potent attack, which has netted 43 goals in 20 league games—marking their best scoring start since tallying 44 goals at this stage in the 1971-72 season. Their offensive firepower has been particularly evident in away matches against newly promoted sides, having failed to find the net just once in their last 16 such encounters.

Angers, however, will be keen to overturn their unfavorable historical record against Marseille, with just one victory in their last 16 league meetings—a 2-1 win in December 2020. During that period, they have settled for eight draws and suffered seven defeats.

Under the guidance of Alexandre Dujeux, Angers will take encouragement from their recent home performances, winning two and drawing one of their last three Ligue 1 games at Stade Raymond Kopa. Another positive result on Sunday would see them go unbeaten in four consecutive home fixtures for the first time since a six-match run spanning May to December 2016.

Their most recent home outing ended in a 1-1 draw against bottom-placed Le Havre, secured by Florent Hanin’s dramatic 90th-minute equalizer. The match was an intense affair, with both teams reduced to 10 men inside the first 16 minutes, as Lilian Raolisoa (Angers) and Arouna Sangante (Le Havre) were both sent off.

Despite the dropped points, Angers extended their buffer over the relegation zone to eight points, providing them with some much-needed breathing space.

Additionally, they were in action on Wednesday, delivering an impressive 3-1 victory at Strasbourg to advance to the Coupe de France quarter-finals. This result further underlines their growing confidence and determination as they prepare for another stern test against Marseille.
