Arteta: I'm accountable because we didn't produce enough.
Following Arsenal's 1-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle, manager Mikel Arteta said:
"We started the game really well, we were on top of it, we looked sharp and alive and the one action: direct play, second ball, ball out wide – they’re so good at that – unbelievable shot and finish. Then the energy shifts, you know the game they want to play is clear. You too often get dragged into that kind of game, we couldn’t find the answers to get out of that.
"You are relying on two or three big chances – the one with Mikel [Merino], two for Declan [Rice], one with Gabriel Jesus. But not enough threat to say we could really change the game and win it. That’s the frustrating part. But credit to Newcastle as well for what they do.
"At this point, we won't be able to find the appropriate words or responses to express our feelings. On Wednesday night against Inter, we must put it on the pitch.
"Winning the title isn't the main goal. Every week, we should strive to be the best versions of ourselves. We weren't our best selves today.
"I didn't sense any worry or panic in the players. That is how I would have felt at the start of the game. I didn't feel that way. I did believe that we lacked a greater sense of purpose, a greater sense of threat, and the ability to actually go out and assist them.
"Odegaard is not here. We could talk about that all day. It has been four or five or six weeks since we last had him. And he hasn't arrived yet. However, we have a lot of other useful solutions. After congratulating Newcastle, we must examine ourselves and move on.
"You want to score a goal when you create three significant chances in the game. But I'm accountable for the team's failure to produce more.
Saliba: Newcastle's defeat against Arsenal was justified.
William Saliba acknowledged he needed to return to his own high level of form and said Arsenal deserved to lose to Newcastle on Saturday.
Eddie Howe's team defeated the Gunners 1-0, and over the ninety-five minutes, they failed to put Newcastle custodian Nick Pope to the test.
"We wanted to win today, so we are a little sad," Saliba said to TNT Sports. But regrettably, we didn't, and we didn't play the game we had in mind. I believe we deserved to lose today.
"They were fantastic too, but we didn't play the way we wanted to pay. We don't deserve to win today. It's okay, though. We concentrate on the upcoming week.
"The goal, cross, and finishing are all excellent. However, we can always improve. We hoped to equalise after they scored an early goal today.
"We must remain united; throughout a similar phase last season, we remained united and had the courage to move forward. We think it's going to return.
"We must improve on the previous game. I need to get back to where I was before because I wasn't very good. However, I must return to my peak performance.
