Fulham 1-4 Wolves: Matheus Cunha scores twice as the visitors escape the relegation zone with a thrilling victory

Wolves defeated Fulham 4-1 thanks to two goals by Matheus Cunha, which lifted Gary O'Neil's team out of the Premier League relegation zone.

At a wet and windy Craven Cottage, the home team got off to a better start and should have taken the lead early on, but Raul Jimenez, who was playing well against his old team, somehow smashed the bar from a few yards out when it looked nearly impossible to miss from that close in.

However, a spectacular goal from Alex Iwobi in the 20th minute gave Marco Silva's team a well-earned lead. The midfielder curled home into the upper left-hand corner from the fringe of the box, sending the Cottage into raptures.

However, immediately after the break, the visitors equalised thanks to a stunning goal from another in-form forward, Cunha, who took Mario Lemina's lofted pass out of the air and then skilfully flicked the ball past Bernd Leno to hush the home crowd.

Eight minutes into the second half, Cunha was involved once more as Wolves overcame Fulham to take the lead thanks to a beautiful passing move in and around the Fulham box. The Brazil international found fellow countryman Joao Gomes in the area, and the midfielder made no mistake with a calm low finish into the far corner.

Player-of-the-match Cunha, who Gary O'Neil said after the game, "there's no limit to where he can go," completed the unlikely second-half comeback. The striker bent a stunning shot over Leno from 25 yards out at full stretch, and substitute Goncalo Guedes added a fourth goal in stoppage time to give the final score a rather unflattering total.

Consequently, Wolves recorded consecutive Premier League victories for the first time since February, moving them out of the drop zone. Following just their second league home loss this season, the Cottagers fall to ninth place in the standings after having to play the last thirty minutes with just ten men when Joachim Andersen hobbled off after five substitutes had been added.

Marco Silva, the Fulham manager:

"He's [Cunha] an excellent example; I'm not surprised because they each have unique qualities. I am aware of their potential, and they have players like Cunha, who is an excellent striker and makes a significant contribution to their style of play," Silva remarked.

"He fights and never gives up, and he can attack from behind and cause issues for the back four with all the balls." He is an excellent illustration of their traits.

Gary O'Neil, manager of Wolves:

"In terms of ability, there is no limit to where he [Cunha] may go. He will initially remain with Wolves for as long as possible, but after that, he will be free to travel anywhere he pleases.

"His importance to us is well known. The Matheus who came to Wolves is not this one.

He has improved a lot, leads that, and I enjoy working with him. His numbers, hunger, and willingness to work on the other side of things show that he has the potential to be a great player. He strives to be the best version of himself every day.
