Kylian Mbappe apologises as the Real Madrid star experiences a hangover from Liverpool.
Real Madrid's second La Liga loss of the season saw star striker Kylian Mbappe save another penalty, dropping them four points behind leaders Barcelona.
After missing yet another penalty in a Real Madrid loss, Kylian Mbappe has apologised.
Real Madrid dropped four points behind Barcelona at the top of La Liga on Wednesday night after suffering a devastating 2-1 loss at Athletic Club. Mbappe, who hasn't been able to please the club's picky fans since joining from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, had another challenging night.
Alejandro Berenguer bundled the ball across the line after Thibaut Courtois parried Inaki Williams' cross, giving Athletic the lead. When Athletic goalie Julen Agirrezabala caught Antonio Rudiger attempting to punch clear a cross in the penalty area, Real was given the opportunity to tie the score.
Mbappe took his time leading up to his penalty, but he telegraphed his sidefooted attempt to the left of the goalie, and Agirrezabala easily swept it away. The penalty that Caoimhin Kelleher stopped in Liverpool's 2-0 Champions League victory against Real Madrid last week was nearly identical.
It would turn out to be expensive once more. After Agirrezabala deflected Mbappe's long effort into his path, Jude Bellingham equalised on a rebound. However, Gorka Guruzeta's error by Fede Valverde allowed him to slide past Courtois and give the home team a 2-1 victory.
After the game, Mbappe felt obliged to apologise on Instagram, writing: "Unpleasant outcome. A major error in a match where every little thing matters. I am alone accountable for it. It's a challenging period, but now is the ideal moment to make a shift and demonstrate my identity.
Mbappe has made 19 appearances for Real Madrid so far this season, scoring 10 goals and dishing out two assists, but he hasn't yet proven to be the elite striker they believed they had acquired from PSG on a free transfer. After yet another subpar performance, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti felt obliged to defend his star attacker.
He stated, "We need to give him time to adjust." He has already scored ten goals and is making every effort to get better. The two of them have spoken, and it's a part of football. Although he stepped up and accepted responsibility, things didn't go as planned, but that's football and things happen.
Ancelotti responded, "Valverde is down and disappointed, as is Kylian," when asked about the player after his mistake resulted in the game-winning goal. He erred, but we shouldn't focus on it. It's a mistake; mistakes happen in sports, and we must focus on the next game.
The Real manager also made a suggestion that another player might be selected for the subsequent penalty. According to Ancelotti, "Vinicius is typically the one who has been strong from the spot for us." "Mbappe, Bellingham, and Vinicius are our three penalty takers."
