Valencia will be looking to secure only their second victory of the 2024-25 La Liga season when they face Leganes at Estadio Municipal de Butarque on Friday night.
Los Che have had a challenging start to the season, currently sitting in 18th place with just five points. In contrast, Leganes, who have returned to La Liga after winning the 2023-24 Segunda Division, hold 16th place with seven points from their opening eight games.
Match Preview
Leganes, under the guidance of Borja Jimenez, are back in the top flight after a four-year absence. Their primary goal this season is survival, and finishing anywhere above 18th would be seen as a success. Despite sitting near the bottom of the table, Leganes have only conceded nine goals in eight matches, showcasing a respectable defensive record.
The season began positively for Leganes, as they remained unbeaten in their first three matches, drawing against Osasuna and Real Valladolid, while securing a 2-1 home victory over Las Palmas. However, their form has dipped in recent weeks, with only two points collected from their last five matches. Nonetheless, they remain unbeaten in their last two outings, earning draws against Getafe and Rayo Vallecano, following three consecutive losses to Mallorca, Real Betis, and Athletic Bilbao.
Historically, Leganes have had recent success against Valencia, as they are unbeaten in their last four La Liga encounters with Los Che. Notably, they secured a 1-0 victory in the corresponding fixture last season.
Valencia's Struggles
Valencia, on the other hand, have endured a tough campaign so far, managing just one win, two draws, and five defeats in their eight matches, leaving them 18th in the standings. Their season started poorly, with only one point from their first five matches. However, they secured their first victory of the season on September 21, with a 2-0 win over Girona at Mestalla.
After their win, Valencia played out a goalless draw with Osasuna but were humbled by a 3-0 defeat to Real Sociedad in their last match, bringing their total goals conceded to 13 in just eight games.
Ruben Baraja’s side finished ninth in La Liga last season, but their performances this term have been far from the standards of the team that finished fourth in 2018-19. Despite their struggles, there is still plenty of time to turn things around, and a win on Friday night would provide a much-needed boost before the October international break.
