Man City 1–2. Man Utd: Erik ten Hag's team wins the FA Cup final at Wembley to cap off a fantastic season.
Report as Manchester United defeats rivals Manchester City to win the FA Cup; Erik ten Hag puts talk about his future at Old Trafford on hold by winning United's second trophy as manager; Garnacho and Mainoo goals secure the victory, securing United's spot in the Europa League.
Erik ten Hag put doubts about his future to rest when he guided Manchester United to FA Cup glory at Wembley, defeating Premier League winners Manchester City 2-1.
Ten Hag's status was a major topic of discussion leading up to the game, as rumors on Friday indicated that United had made the decision to sever ties with the Dutchman regardless of the outcome of the championship match.
If this was to be his last game as manager, the United players gave him the ultimate send-off, as goals from Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho in the first half startled Pep Guardiola's team. Garnacho capitalized on a disastrous mistake made by Josko Gvardiol and Stefan Ortega.
In the second half, Manchester City made two attempts to tie the score, but Andre Onana saved long-range shots from Kyle Walker and Erling Haaland, and the latter's goal struck the bar. Onana, though, was unable to stop substitute Jeremy Doku's goal as City equalized in the 87th minute, setting up an exciting conclusion.
The fourth official signaled seven minutes of stoppage time, to the roars of the city supporters. However, United supporters celebrated when the full-time whistle blew, as their team managed to hold on to prevent their opponents from becoming the first team to win the league and FA Cup in back-to-back seasons.
After winning the Carabao Cup the previous year, United now has two trophies under Ten Hag: the FA Cup. In addition, Manchester United successfully avoided a poor league season by qualifying for the Europa League; nevertheless, it is still unclear if Ten Hag would guide the team into the following one.
Ten Hag: "I don't know" about his future at Manchester United; Keane: Hopefully, they will back the manager.
Ten Hag responded, "I don't know," when questioned about his plans following the game. All I can do is get my team ready, help them grow, and move them forward. It's a project, this. We were in disarray when I arrived, but today things are better. We are, however, exactly where we want to be.
"Trophy wins are the main goal of football. I wish to be the finest football player. I want to play football with movement. However, you must win medals and games. That's the mindset we've introduced. The FA Cup was our one and only chance, and we took it. I'm incredibly proud of the staff and players."
After the FA Cup victory, former Manchester United captain Roy Keane believes the team will support Ten Hag.
"We know the manager is under pressure, and there are questions before the game, but we don't know if a decision has been made," he stated. There's never anything easy about getting ready for a cup final.
"In football, you have to cherish these times with the players, coaches, and fans. And when it comes to it, cross the bridge. Today, the manager fulfilled his duties. An added bonus would be to defeat Manchester City in the FA Cup final. Hopefully, they will back the management."
