Greek giants Olympiacos and last year's runners-up Fiorentina will face off in Athens for the 2023-24 Europa Conference League final on Wednesday evening, aiming for victory.

Although only 10 miles separate Olympiacos' home ground from the AEK Arena, Fiorentina will seek to spoil the occasion by avenging their painful loss in Prague from the previous year.

By dismantling Premier League contenders Aston Villa in the semi-finals with an impressive 6-2 aggregate win, Olympiacos secured their spot in this prestigious match. This final holds special significance for Piraeus club's fans, who won't have to travel far to support their team in its first UEFA final.

Thrylos ("The Legend") had narrowly defeated Maccabi Tel Aviv and Fenerbahce in the previous rounds - dramatically overcoming Maccabi after extra time and besting Fenerbahce on penalties. However, it was a stellar performance from Moroccan striker Ayoub El Kaabi that ensured their place in this week's final.

El Kaabi scored five goals against Villa, bringing his total to 15 goals in continental competition this season - a record for an African player in a single European campaign. He has come to symbolize Olympiacos' unexpected success in 2024.

Experienced coach Jose Luis Mendilibar, who took over in mid-February after Carlos Carvalhal's departure, has guided Olympiacos to the brink of emulating his previous achievement of leading a struggling Sevilla side to another Europa League title last year.

This time, 64 years after Olympiacos' first-ever appearance in a European competition, Mendilibar has guided the side to become just the second Greek squad to make it to a UEFA final.

Olympiacos is under special pressure because of the proximity of Wednesday's game to their home. They just finished third in the Greek Super League after a 2-2 draw with their bitter rivals Panathinaikos in their final domestic game.

With nine days to prepare, Olympiacos coach Jose Luis Mendilibar will have all of his key players available for the championship, including the lately injured ex-Fiorentina attacker Stevan Jovetic.

Jovetic, who scored 40 goals in 135 games for the Viola between 2008 and 2013, scored a late goal to help his team qualify for the Europa Conference League in this month's Super League derby match against Panathinaikos. Despite this, it is unlikely that he would start against his old team.

Ayoub El Kaabi, the team's leading scorer in all European tournaments this season with 10 goals in the knockout stages so far, should be supported in the final third by Daniel Podence, who was sent off the previous game, and Kostas Fortounis.

As unpredictable as his often exasperating forwards, Fiorentina manager Vincenzo Italiano has only repeated the same starting lineup in consecutive games once in his three-year tenure at the club, so his team selection may include some surprises.

In Fiorentina's most recent match, where they disrupted Claudio Ranieri's emotional farewell by defeating Cagliari 3-2 in Sardinia, regular starters like Nico Gonzalez, Arthur, Lucas Beltran, and Christian Kouame were all given a rest. Antonin Barak and Jonathan Ikone, however, will return to the bench to make way for the usual starters.

For his penultimate match as Fiorentina's manager, Italiano will be without two players: the injury-prone playmaker Gaetano Castrovilli, who was omitted from the UEFA squad list, and winger Riccardo Sottil, who fractured his collarbone earlier this month.
