Pep Guardiola's team is still in the top four fight even though Erling Haaland breaks yet another scoring record.

As Brighton, another team vying for a spot in the top four, held Manchester City 2-2 at the Etihad, Erling Haaland became the fastest player in Premier League history to reach 100 goal contributions.

Up to eight clubs, including Brighton and City, are fiercely competing for European football this season, but despite record-breaking Haaland's best efforts, neither team was able to seize the lead.

"Isn't that okay?  In reference to Haaland's most recent honour, Pep Guardiola stated, "Hopefully we can keep improving and help him score more."

Omar Marmoush scored the first goal after winning a penalty due to a foolish challenge by Adam Webster. After Pervis Estupinan equalised with a precise free kick, Marmoush scored a fantastic second goal.

The game was played at a frantic speed and Abdukodir Khusanov turned into his own net early in the second period to draw confident Brighton - on a four-game winning streak - level for the second time. And there were chances galore for a winner.

Carlos Baleba crashed over unmarked from ten yards out, Nico Gonzalez hit the post for City, and Yankuba Minteh allowed a back-post sitter go through his legs for no apparent reason.  Neither team managed to convert a single point into a valuable three.

Guardiola's team continues to have a five-point lead over resurgent Brighton in seventh place, leaving the race for a spot in the Champions League next season as intriguingly open as ever.

Pep confronted the referee, but why?

Referee Simon Hooper gave Jeremy Doku a simulation ticket in the second stanza for leaping over Jan Paul van Hecke's approaching tackle.  Although there appeared to be a sincere attempt to play the ball, the challenge was poorly timed and played at full speed.  Referee Hooper waved a warning, implying that Doku had dived, as Doku jumped to avoid making contact with the defender.

Guardiola discussed the situation after the game, saying: "He doesn't jump, he can break his leg."  To escape touch, he leaps.  Doku should be aware that they are not a diving player.  It is what it is.  That choice did not result in a win or loss for us.  I told the referee that he did it to defend himself because he might get a harsh kick if he didn't jump.

Hurzeler: Our decision-making failed us

"The winner had two or three really good chances in the second half.  We must improve the little margins before doing it better the following time.

"I'm more interested in pushing myself to the next level than I am in statistics or records.  We performed our way today.  Although it's undeniable that we won this game the first time, it's regrettable that we didn't get three points.

"We failed to strike the ideal mix between playing a long ball and playing out from the back, which cost us two points.  Our decision-making was not at its best level.  We were accountable for the first half's lack of cleanliness.
