Real Madrid defeats Dortmund to win the European Cup for a record 15 times.
In Saturday's Champions League final at Wembley, Real Madrid defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-0 despite a torrent of Dortmund goals to win Europe's premier club competition for the fifteenth time. Goals from Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Junior sealed the victory late in the game.
Right back On minute 74, Carvajal headed in from Toni Kroos' corner, and then Vinicius shot into the far corner to cement the Spanish powerhouse's record as the most successful club in Champions League and European Cup history.
Madrid has won the competition six times in the previous 11 seasons and nine of the last eleven European Cup finals. But they had to rely on some luck as underdogs more than once throughout that run. As Niclas Fuellkrug struck the crossbar and Karim Adeyemi was unable to convert a one-on-one opportunity with Thibaut Courtois, Dortmund applied pressure to Los Blancos but were left to bitterly regret not taking advantage of their first-half opportunities.
However, Madrid has consistently managed to survive in Europe's top league and has added more history to the city of England. The Real Madrid great Paco Gento is one of just six players to have won the European Cup, along with Carvajal, Kroos, Nacho, and Luka Modric. With his sixth championship, Carlo Ancelotti further cemented his status as the most successful coach in the competition's history.
