Russell Martin: Following Tottenham's crushing defeat, Southampton fires its manager, leaving the team at the bottom of the Premier League.
After being hired by Southampton in June 2023, Russell Martin guided the team to promotion through the Championship play-offs; in 16 Premier League games, Saints have only won once and lost thirteen times. Tottenham crushed Southampton 5-0 at home on Sunday.
Russell Martin was fired as Southampton's manager following their 5-0 loss to Tottenham on Sunday.
Southampton is now nine points outside of safety and at the basement of the Premier League as a result of the outcome. Simon Rusk will take over as interim manager of the Under-21 team, beginning on Wednesday with the Carabao Cup quarterfinal matchup against Liverpool.
During and during Sunday's game, Southampton supporters could be heard jeering at Martin. In his press conference following the game, Martin responded, saying: "Since the first day, the fans have been incredible for us.
"I understand the frustration, I also understand the modern world and football and what it is and what it's about."
"As a person, [it doesn't hurt] very much," he continued shortly after. But since you work so hard every day, it hurts a lot when I bring my ego into it as a boss.
That stings, of course, because we put in a lot of labour. However, you must acknowledge that it is a natural aspect of sport and that it is what it is.
He said, "Not a clue, mate," when asked if the fans will receive their desire. No clue. You are addressing the incorrect man.
However, it's not personal because neither they nor I know each other. I recognise that it's a critique of the work I'm doing. You can't condemn someone you don't know, in my opinion. Thus, it's a critique of the work I do.
Less than ninety minutes after the final whistle, the club announced Martin's resignation.
Martin, who was hired in June 2023, guided Southampton to promotion through the Championship play-offs, but in 16 Premier League games, he has only managed one win and thirteen losses.
Aaron Ramsdale, the goalie for Southampton, was a TNT commentator during the game. "I feel very sorry for Martin," he stated at full time, prior to the announcement of the dismissal.
"I believe the boys are still pursuing him. Nothing about Russell Martin is in doubt, in my opinion.
"The fans do deserve better and they're sticking with us, and it's one we have to move on very quickly ahead of Wednesday."
