Spurs win their first trophy in 17 years thanks to Johnson's tenacious goal.

Tottenham defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final, thanks to a tenacious goal from Brennan Johnson in the first half that gave them their first trophy in seventeen years.

 The game and goal were appropriate for a matchup between the 16th and 17th-place teams in the Premier League, but Spurs ultimately ended their trophy drought by taking home their first championship since 2008.

The assertion made by Ange Postecoglou earlier in the season that he consistently wins trophies in his second season has been confirmed.  Although it is unclear if he would be sufficient to stay as Spurs manager, the team will compete in the Champions League the next season.

There was some misunderstanding over the objective.  Luke Shaw and Johnson charged after Pape Sarr's well-placed cross.  After bouncing back and forth between them, the ball left Shaw's arm and headed for the goal.

 The sea of white jerseys inside the San Mames went into raptures when the Spurs forward received the smallest of final touches at the near post.

Man Utd had three golden-edged chances after the hour and dominated the second half as they looked for an equaliser.

 Leny Yoro's foot was outstretched when Bruno Fernandes' floating free-kick struck it, but Guglielmo Vicario leaped to keep him out.  Micky van de Ven then acrobatically cleared Rasmus Hojlund's header off the line, saving the Spurs custodian.

This season, Fernandes has saved his team numerous times. He fizzed a free header past the post.  Vicario saved the game-winning header from Shaw in the final seven minutes of additional time.

 Then, as Man Utd ran out of options in Bilbao, Casemiro blasted into the side netting.  It implies that they won't play in Europe the next season, which will probably affect their summer moves.

 However, Tottenham won the night, defeating Manchester United for the fourth time this season and taking home their first European championship since 1984.

Ange: Winning EL will have transformed Spurs more than finishing third.

"I wasn't bragging [about his second season trophy wins]."  I was declaring something.  I thought so.  This football team wouldn't change if we finished third; it would change if we won something.

 "I'm not scared to say it; if I didn't meet expectations, I was glad to accept them.  That was my goal.  That's what I could say.  I was ready to put it on.  I was constantly reminded of it, but only because there was a chance to win anything.

It's the club's self-perception.  The club hasn't done enough to defend itself, and people are ready to criticise it.  People have lived here for a long time and have had nothing to rely on, so I can understand it.  I hope this works.

 "They have every reason to believe they can win again and assemble a winning club for the upcoming season.  The top clubs do that if that's how you see yourself, regardless of the noise level.  Since they've experienced success, they anticipate it.  I hope this helps the club move ahead.
