Liverpool's 6-3 victory over Tottenham puts them four points clear at the top of the Premier League.

In a devastating 6-3 statement victory at Tottenham on Super Sunday, Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah both scored twice, giving Liverpool a four-point lead at the top of the Premier League going into Christmas.

Despite James Maddison (41) cutting the deficit, goals from Diaz (23), Alexis Mac Allister (36) and Dominik Szoboszlai (45+1) in the first half gave the Reds complete control.

With 30 minutes remaining, Salah took the pitch after Szoboszlai had set him up twice for close-range goals (54, 61) to apparently seal the victory.

The monster of all comebacks was threatened by Dejan Kulusevski (72) and Dominic Solanke (83) but Diaz sprinted onto Salah's ball to give Arne Slot's team a remarkable triumph (85).

Liverpool has an advantage in the title race if Tottenham loses by a tennis score.

How Liverpool solidified their top spot for Christmas

Liverpool is sitting atop the tree on December 25 for the first time since 2020–21. The indicators this year under Slot are concerning, even though they have only won the title in one of the last seven top-flight campaigns in which they were at the top at Christmas.

They completed yet another challenging away game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. After Chelsea's goalless draw at Everton earlier on Sunday, they were officially named the Christmas No. 1 team prior to kickoff.

This time, no VAR dispute would deny the Colombian the first goal after Diaz's goal in the matchup last season was famously disallowed for offside.

Only a positive process from the time Trent AlexanderDiaz headed back across Fraser Forster into the far corner as Arnold extended his body and placed the ball on a platter.

Gary Neville, commentator for Sky Sports, stated: "The cross is something else! It's flawless. Few players in Premier League history have ever been that accurate. Perhaps De Bruyne, Beckham, and Gerrard.

It meant that Spurs had given up the first goal in 14 Premier League home games in 2024, which is the joint-highest number ever given by a team in the league in a single calendar year.

Andrew Robertson's cross was contested by Szoboszlai, but it fell sweetly for Mac Allister, who headed in from close range for his season-opening goal.

When it comes to Mac Allister and Christmas, a break-in is never too far away, but the Argentine gambled to double his team's lead. When Kulusevski dispossessed him for Maddison's well-placed shot to give the hosts hope, referee Sam Barrott refused to help.

It wouldn't last long because, consistent with Spurs' disrespect for game conditions this season, they gave up a third goal just before halftime when Salah put in Szoboszlai for a calm finish.

After the restart, the Hungarian would return the favour for Salah twice, but Spurs would make up for those two concessions with two more goals of their own. Kulusevski's volley was brilliantly conceived by Solanke, and when the striker swept in Brennan Johnson's header back across goal, you had to wonder what else this Tottenham squad could accomplish.

After having the first, Diaz would finally add the last word, blasting across Forster to put a stop to the chaos. Tottenham has scored 21 goals in their last three games. Are you not amused? However, only one of these teams will emerge victorious in May.

Postecoglou: We won't change our approach

"We had a challenging day with a painful outcome. Liverpool deserves praise for being a very good and well-established team. For us today, it was too far to go. We were clearly lacking in energy and the capacity to match their level of competition.

"Over the past 18 months, I've been incredibly patient while responding to the same enquiries. We will not alter our strategy. I get the impression that folks believe that all I have to do is turn a switch, and our team will magically change.

"We must acknowledge that there will be obstacles on our path, and I will remain committed to assembling this team the way we desire.

"The players are steadfast in their dedication to our mission. I don't like our current position [at the table]. Regarding pressure, I'm not sure.

"I feel like I'm being judged, and all I can do is try to get us through a tough time and make sure we can move up the table once we have a healthier team and some important players back." It's for other people to evaluate if you're suggesting that my ranking of 10th indicates that I'm not performing well and should feel uneasy.
