Harry Kane sets a new record for English goal scorers in the Champions League as Bayern Munich defeats Dinamo Zagreb 9 to 2.
Bayern Munich crushed Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 at the Allianz Arena in their first Champions League group stage encounter of the season. It was an incredible night for the team. Harry Kane, the captain of England, scored four goals to lead Bayern to their biggest victory in the competition. Leon Goretzka, Raphaël Guerreiro, Leroy Sané, and Michael Olise (2) scored goals elsewhere.
The writing was obviously on the wall for Vincent Kompany's team to win spectacularly after leading 3-0 at the half, but they had to weather an early scare when Zagreb scored two goals in quick succession to open the second half. After Manuel Neuer was replaced by Sven Ulreich at the half, the Rekordmeister regained the upper hand when Kane scored Bayern's fourth goal of the game, saving Bayern's blushes.
Kane was the star of the show with his four goals, making history as the highest English goal scorer in the Champions League despite a full team effort. With 33 goals thus far in the competition, he has eclipsed Wayne Rooney's previous record of thirty. "You know you're doing something right when you're talking to Wayne Rooney. He is among the top players in the history of the game and one of the greatest English players ever. It's a great accomplishment," Kane told UEFA TV following the game.
.. Kane has already scored six hat-tricks for Bayern since joining from Tottenham last summer, and he doesn't appear to be slowing down anytime soon. He acknowledged that he enjoys holding onto the match balls he gets after scoring hat-tricks during the decisive victory over Zagreb. "Even though the boys may be tired of signing them, I keep all the balls after hat-tricks, so keep them coming." Even though my son Louis is just three years old, he now enjoys playing football. I'll bring it home and place it next to his bed, and he'll be delighted to wake up in the morning," he said with joy.
