Mason Greenwood's "preferred transfer" from Manchester United disclosed.
Mason Greenwood has been linked to Marseille as Manchester United looks to set up a permanent transfer for the attacker.
Greenwood's loan at Getafe, where he finished with eight goals in 33 La Liga games, is coming to an end, and it's still unclear what will happen to him after leaving Old Trafford.
After the Crown Prosecution Service dismissed allegations of assault, attempted rape, and coercive behavior due to the withdrawal of key witnesses, United had originally hoped to reintegrate Greenwood into their first-team squad. However, a fierce outcry led to a retreat.
United has long been known to want a permanent sale, and teams connected to the 22-year-old include Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Lazio, and Napoli Barcelona.
According to The Athletic, Marseille is "exploring a deal," albeit negotiations are still in the preliminary stages and the financial details are not yet known. Greenwood, however, is reportedly "keen to recruit" for the French team and prefers Marseille over other possible destinations at this time.
Roberto De Zerbi, who is leaving Brighton & Hove Albion, is expected to take over as Marseille's new manager. In 2023–2024, the team participated in the Europa League and the Champions League qualifying rounds, reaching the semi-finals of the latter competition. However, a dismal eighth-place result in Ligue 1 means that Stade Velodrome won't host any European football in the upcoming season.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 35, scored 30 goals throughout all competitions last season, which was a major source of reliance for Marseille. There is a need for more firepower because former Sheffield United attacker Iliman Ndiaye and center-back Chancel Mbemba tied for the second-highest score of six each.
The team last won a Ligue 1 championship in 2010, and their most recent trophy was won in 2012. Even so, they continue to hold a legendary reputation in French football as the only French winners of the European Cup and nine-time national champions (Saint-Etienne ten and Paris Saint-Germain twelve).
According to reports, United is looking to £30 million for Greenwood. If they are unable to get an acceptable price, though, the club may decide to contemplate a second loan and give Greenwood's contract a 12-month extension through 2026. Getafe might become relevant again in such case.
