Mount says his best night at Manchester United is "worth the wait."

Mason Mount became the first United substitute to score twice in a European knockout match since David Beckham against Real Madrid in 2003 as Man Utd defeated Athletic Club 7-1 on aggregate in their Europa League semi-final to secure their spot in the final against Tottenham on May 21.

Mount says his best night at Manchester United is "worth the wait."

Mason Mount claims that after his two goals off the bench against Athletic Club guaranteed Manchester United's spot in the Europa League final, it was worth the wait to finally ignite his career.

Since joining United from Chelsea in 2023 for an initial £55 million, Mount's career has been marred by injuries and has threatened to end entirely, but this display on what was unquestionably his best night for the team might be the game-changer.

When Mount entered the game an hour later with Amad Diallo and Kobbie Mainoo, United was trailing 1-0 and had trouble at Old Trafford, but they were ahead 3-1 overall. With a 7-1 victory over the two legs, they secured their spot in the final against Tottenham on May 21 in Bilbao.

A late burst of goals, four in less than 20 minutes, was sparked by Mount's equaliser, a quick turn and finish in the area. Rasmus Hojlund and Casemiro scored goals before the midfielder's second, a shot from close to the halfway line with his weaker foot.

"Yes, without a doubt," Mount told TNT Sports when asked if it was his best 20 minutes wearing a Manchester United shirt.  Since I've been here, I've experienced setbacks and injuries, which has made things challenging.

"I had a feeling that something positive would happen.  I persisted, putting in a lot of effort in my training each day and making an effort to be upbeat, and it paid off when I was given this chance."

He went on to say, "It was too long," alluding to his need for such a feeling on a significant occasion.

Mount, who had never scored for United at Old Trafford, became the team's first substitute to score twice in a European knockout game since David Beckham's 2003 victory over Real Madrid.

"The crowd has been unbelievable," he stated.  "They have remained with us.  I've been looking forward to this particular night for a long time because it's my first goals here at Old Trafford.

"To go back to Bilbao, a special moment for us, and we want to finish strong now."

Mount subsequently posted a picture of himself celebrating his goal in front of the Old Trafford crowd on social media, along with the caption, "Moments like these are worth the wait,"  "Back to Bilbao, Reds!"

The entire Manchester United team, but especially head coach Ruben Amorim, who has supported Mount since joining in the middle of the season from Sporting despite his injury problems, relished his moment.

"Not just me, if you look at the bench, that is the best feeling as a coach," Amorim remarked in his post-match press conference when asked if he smiled when Mount scored.

"Everyone in that locker room can see Mason Mount doing everything he can to be available, which is why the other guys on the bench are so thrilled for him.

"You can see that both of his goals are excellent, and he is a pretty outstanding player.  Therefore, I believe that not only Mason Mount and I were thrilled for him, but so were our teammates.

"I am so happy for Mason Mount, he is such a player," Amorim continued in an interview with TNT Sports.  He works incredibly hard.  He's good.

"When you see a guy like that, putting in a lot of effort each day."  With a player like him, all you want to do is assist them.

"He is perfect for that [No 10] position because he can be a midfielder, he can run like a winger, he can play with his back to the goal."
