League-leading Napoli head into the weekend looking to firm up their grip at the top as they host lowly Lecce at the Stadio Maradona.

Both teams meet Saturday afternoon, with the home side seeking a fourth consecutive win against visitors lying second-to-last following a heavy six-goal loss from the previous week.

Napoli didn't produce a vintage performance and yet still managed to pick up where they had left off in coming from the international break with three points at Empoli, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scoring from the penalty spot after the foul on Matteo Politano for a 2-0 win that kept them two clear at the summit of Serie A.

This is Napoli's fourth-best start this century, with 19 points from eight matches, and Antonio Conte has managed to turn things around for a team which struggled to qualify for Europe last season.

With mid-week rests while rivals traverse Europe, Napoli are unmistakably gunning for the Scudetto to take it back from Conte's old club, Inter Milan. Recent performances have shown them to be strong and a potential title contender.

Because Napoli have kept clean sheets in four of the last five league games - a 10-1 aggregate scoreline, only Juventus have matched their defensive record since early September.

Less about dominating possession, Napoli's style is about efficiency. They are the only top team in Europe's leading leagues to fall outside the top three for average possession, with only the 11th highest share in Serie A at 47%. Many times, they have proven how lethal they can be on counterattacks.

Lecce are actually unbeaten in their three league trips to Naples, albeit having lost their last four attempts to beat this week's hosts - they have not scored in their last two meetings.

They will be hoping rather than expecting victory this week after a 6-0 thumping at the hands of Fiorentina last week jeopardised Luca Gotti's position. Gotti and Salentini's club president held an emergency meeting after his team collapsed to a humiliating home defeat at Via Del Mare after Antonino Gallo was sent off early in the first half to reduce them to 10 men.

Still a contender, yes, but the fact is Lecce find themselves in 19th place with only five points and have scored only three goals, fewest of any team in the top five leagues in Europe.

With 18 goals conceded, only Montpellier HSC have a worse goal differential than the Giallorossi, who next week play Hellas Verona in an early relegation six-point match. Even though the Scotland star was hailed by Conte for his first-half display against 'Gladbach' last week, Billy Gilmour ought to earn another start in Napoli's midfield with Stanislav Lobotka still out after he suffered a thigh strain while on duty with Slovakia. First-choice goalkeeper Meret has resumed training but it is unclear whether he'll be passed fit to replace Elia Caprile in goal.
